Hi,

On the "All Tasks for ..." page, what does the status "Timed out - no response" mean? Is it fatal - is the task dead and gone and I have to abort it in BOINC Manager? What causes it?

I had suspended a couple of tasks for a while, then re-enabled one, which appears in BOINC Manager to be running fine - a Theory task with (supposedly) over 7 days to go. It's been running for, I think, at least a day by now, and that status has not changed.

Thanks.

Exactly as you surmise - your version of that task is dead, and so you might as well abort it.
This message appears when the task has been on your computer beyond its deadline. One way to reduce the possibility of this in the future is to have a small cache, but even this is not guaranteed to work if your PC is slow or only runs BOINC for very few hours a day.

Thanks for that info.

But that raises another question. My understanding of the "Deadline" column in the BOINC manager is that it is the deadline to start the task, not finish it. I seem to remember quite a few tasks in various projects that started before the Deadline but finished after it, and were still accepted with no issues. My memory, however, is increasingly fallible. Apparently, my understanding was... wrong?

Deadline is, for most projects, the time the task should be completed, returned and reported to the project. Some projects do give a bit of lee-way, but not all.

[edit to add]
Both your recent tasks that failed due to exceeding the deadline were sent out to others within a few minutes of the deadline, one has already been completed, returned and validated.
