Hi! i'm trying to get some recent information about those recent simulation we are running now that the LHC is back online.

Do you know where can we find a project update?

Also, when i run these units, graphics does now show what the current job is all about. i only see placeholder photos.

i'm a bit concern that "Is it still worth crunshing these units" now that LHC is back online?
Thanks!

Sylvain

So much data is produced from the actual collisions that it would not be possible to search through it all, looking for something interesting. The simulations we run allow the scientists to narrow their search.
I liken it to looking for a needle in a haystack - in field full of haystacks. The simulations we run let the scientists at least start looking in the right haystack, then in the right portion of that haystack.

I believe linking the graphics to the individual job in progress (if that's even possible?) would require considerable resources that would be better allocated to doing the actual calculations, so something more generic is presented instead.

There was some work a few years ago to try to produce real-time live images of the processes being simulated, but there were several technical problems that proved too difficult to solve, for example the extra resources required that Ray mentioned.

People are still crunching through the data collected in the last LHC run ("Run 2", 2015-2018), and the simulations we run here are to help with those analyses. Most of the data analysis takes years to complete and so there is no urgent need yet for large-scale simulations of the current LHC run ("Run 3", 2022-2025). We hope to start running Run 3 simulations at some point next year.
