Can multithreaded version of CMS be implemented to reduce overhead? So virtualbox doesn't have to emulate entire system for each workunit?

CMSSW can (and often does) run multithreaded. It's finding a way that suits all volunteer machines that is the difficult part. We did have the facility in -dev to run multi-core VMs, but each core ran a separate CMSSW job, not all cores working on one multithreaded job. This turned out to have its own inefficiencies (as you can no doubt imagine) and in practice I found that efficiency dropped with more than two cores/VM.
