I just got my new mac studio which is going to replace an old 2013 mac pro and I just realized that the LHC@home project was using Virtualbox to perform some calculations.

Unfortunately, Virtualbox doesn't work on ARM machines and according to my information, Oracle doesn't plan to adapt it to these machines.

Are there any plans to update the LHC@home program so that it can perform calculations on Apple Silicon machines?
It's a pity to deprive oneself of such a computing power.

Regards,
Dan

Maybe you can install UTM from mac app store and emulate Centos 8 stream, install cernvmfs, boinc, and run theory applications in it?

For ATLAS tasks you will need to install singularity with "sudo dnf install epel-release" and "sudo dnf install singularity"

Its more a question to the BOINC developers, there is not really infrastructure in BOINC to work with another VM solution.

The point of the VM solutions were to make it easier for the scientists, not having to port the code to different architectures. Since Apple hasn't finished Rosetta for VMs to emulate x86 on Arm then it would be significant work for the scientist to port.

I happened to download a new version today and noticed that there is a VirtualBox 7.0.2 download for 'Developer preview for macOS / Arm64 (M1/M2) hosts' on the virtualbox.org website. https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Downloads

The boinc team did a code check in 2 months ago with a wrapper so maybe in latest version it works?

Does arm mac virtualbox version run x86_64 systems or only arm systems?
