What I have noticed with one my machines for quite a while, has now become true for all other machines with which I crunch Theory: I can download and crunch concurrently only 2 tasks, regardless of which settings I have in the BOINC manager (e.g. maximum work for 10 days).

With ATLAS and CMS, this problem does not occur (with Sixtrack not either).

Has anyone made the same experience and found out how to solve the problem?

Only Sixtrack respects the boinc manager settings by default.

The project did this to because default settings would freeze peoples computer up when you tried to launch say 8 theory tasks with 8Gb of RAM, or even worse for ATLAS.

If you want BOINC to control then you have to set Max # jobs & Max # CPUs to No limit, the downside is ATLAS task will use all cores and something like 10Gb of Ram per WU, you can override this locally.

thank you for the hint, Toby. It works well.
In fact: if I want a given machine to download and crunch 3 tasks, I put max # CPUs and Max # Tasks to 3. For 5, I do same with 5. It's perfect.
