Like many organisations, CERN is also affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Researchers in the CERN community are trying to help out in different ways, as explained on this web page. As part of this effort to fight COVID-19, we also contribute computing power to Folding@home and Rosetta@home from temporarily available servers that were about to be decommissioned. During periods like this with little work from LHC@home, we also encourage you to participate in other BOINC projects such as Rosetta@home and contribute to the global fight of the pandemic. Many thanks for your contributions to LHC@home and continued happy crunching! With the best of wishes of good health for your and your families from the LHC@home team. |

Very pleased to hear about LHC@Home's resource allocation shift (for those particular servers) to Rosetta@Home and Folding@Home- I too have switch a majority of my computing cycles to those efforts. This effort will only help LHC@Home in the long run- once all of us have COVID-19 removed from the many things we all need to worry about... --keep those servers socially distant ! ;-) |

Thank you so much for your efforts. I have switched to Rosetta@Home exclusively until this threat is overcome. |

Thanks for the sugestion, I set to NNT, will ramp up on the other 2 for the time being. |

Yep switched my main cruncher over to R@H & F@H some weeks ago, good to hear LHC pitching in too :) Team AnandTech - SETI@H, Muon1 DPAD, F@H, MW@H, A@H, LHC@H, POGS, R@H, DHEP, CPDN, E@H. Main rig - Ryzen 3600, MSI B450 Gm Pro C AC, 32GB DDR4 3200, RX580 8GB, Win10 64bit 2nd rig - i7 4930k @4.1 GHz, 16 GB DDR3 1866, HD 7870XT 3GB(DS), Win7 64bit |

As a long time RAH cruncher I am glad to see some of you here at LHC switching over some or all your computers to the project. Be sure to support FAH (Folding at Home) as well. The two complement each other and are the two big powerhouses for protein folding. FAH accepts GPU as well as CPU. RAH is CPU only. Thanks to LHC for donating their older servers to help with the data overload happening by so many people adding their computers to these projects. Lets hope they find something soon in all the data. |

Further to my post a few weeks ago, I have found I was spending more that I thought on leccy but I can justify making a contribution, however small, towards the Global search for a way to combat the communal foe. It has claimed an old uncle who we were all convinced would live long enough to get a telegram from the Queen but sadly that was not to be. I couldn't even get to the funeral due to "unnecessary travel" restrictions. I have fired up 2 hosts again; 1 running Rosetta and 1 Folding as they seem to be approaching the problem from slightly different directions so I didn't want to favour one over the other. 3-of-4 cores on each to keep the fan slower and hence less wasteful. And I'm contributing to the CERN team stats on both just to keep my association going even while not directly contributing here. Stay safe, stay well and I hope to be back simulating "banging those rocks together" once we know what the "new normal" is going to be. |

As a long time RAH cruncher I am glad to see some of you here at LHC switching over some or all your computers to the project. I cannot find Folding at Home on the Boinc project list. This https://foldingathome.org/faqs/high-performance/fah-on-boinc/ says they were working on a Boinc version in 2006. So 14 years later and still not done it? Sorry, but I'm not going to start using another program. If they put it on Boinc (which can't be hard as there are many small projects doing it) they would get a lot more volunteers. |

If only politics would work straight forward as you do! :-) Yep, switched to Rosetta temporarely. Thanks guys for all your efforts. |

BOINC is a Berkeley UC project, Folding@home is a Stanford U project. No mix. Tullio |

Luckily for me I live in Scotland, where they don't take the "lockdown" that seriously. I can go out if I need to, I'm perfectly capable of avoiding close contact with others. I'd think a funeral justifies being let out of your home "jail cell". Our governments really have screwed up on this one, I won't be voting the same way again, that's if enough businesses have survived that civilisation continues. |

BOINC is a Berkeley UC project, Folding@home is a Stanford U project. No mix. No mix? Why? Childish feud? Politics? The only thing that matters is getting as many volunteers as possible to get as much science done as possible. I for one am running five Boinc projects already, and anything requiring a seperate program is more hassle than it's worth. |

No mix? Why? Childish feud? Politics? No, they operate differently. Folding needs a new work unit to be downloaded immediately after finishing the old one. There is no "buffer" as such. They start the download when the current one is 99% complete, which is necessary since they base a new work unit on the results of the last one. BOINC is not set up that way, at least not originally. With enough tinkering, they might be able to do it. There is occasionally talk of it, though in the midst of a pandemic I think it will take a back seat. |

No mix? Why? Childish feud? Politics? I don't see why it has to work like that. Since there are many thousands of people running F&H, surely your next WU doesn't have to be based on your last one, and could be based on someone else's last one? Anyway, there are plenty worthwhile things I can run through Boinc, and I would only ever consider running something outside of Boinc if Boinc could not provide enough work I want to do. Since I now have 6 computers running 24/7, I like to be able to control them all from one machine easily, through Boinctasks. Having other non-Boinc things running here and there would be very messy. |

It is based on "someone else's" last one. I did not mean to imply that you got the next one in that series back to your own machine. There are others always available, but they want to complete a series before starting up a new one. But it leads to the same conclusion. They have to download the next one just in time, in order to provide it to "someone else" rapidly upon completion. Time is of the essence in Folding. That is not true of a lot of (in fact most) BOINC projects, where one result is usually more or less independent of another. |

Since there are many thousands of people running F&H, surely your next WU doesn't have to be based on your last one, and could be based on someone else's last one? Boinc can manage this. Imagine you ran Boinc with no buffer (which is in fact I believe the default setting). It will only download a task shortly before the one it's already running is completed. It should be easy enough to set up Folding as a boinc project where the server will not send out a large number of tasks. Milkyway for example limits how many tasks you can get. I cannot download more than 2.5 hours of their tasks for my GPUs. So, if I connected an 8 core machine to Folding through Boinc, the server would hand out only 8 tasks. When 2 are completed, it would know I had 6 already, and only give 2 more. |

It isn't quite so simple, but it is a start. https://boinc.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=13513&postid=96960#96960 |
