Can anyone tell me how BOINC is improving, say, CMS. What exactly is the gain to these computers doing this processing? Surely it cannot be to save time to analyze data, so what is it exactly trying to accomplish? Thanks in advance |

Can anyone tell me how BOINC is improving, say, CMS. BOINC just allows you to attach to the project and download the application and the data that runs on it. You are really trying to do the simulations for the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) particle detector on the Large Hadron Collider particle accelerator at CERN. Similarly for ATLAS, another particle detector. The Theory application is not tied to a particular detector, and the SixTrack project helps them to operate the accelerator beam. So BOINC is just intermediary software. It does not do the actual work. |

Thanks for the reply. What I am really trying to ascertain is what benefit is being provided by having outside computers supporting any of these projects. In simple terms, what is being accomplished? I thought this was to speed up data analysis but If the goal is not to eventually reduce time for someone what is being gained? Does any of this ever get used by anyone?. How is it determined that outside computers are contributing? |

Hi Maylinh, This BOINC project LHC@home is contributing real computing power to the CERN experiments provided by thousands of volunteers lending us their home computers. The work they do is really incorporated into CERN’s results. Most of it is used to simulate experiments rather than analyse their measurements but this is an essential part of our work to compare theory with experiments. Hope this helps. Ben |
