Hello All
I have tried to setup some new rules for the forums for when we go live please read and give me your comments:
Rules

I am also planning to remove all the old forums so we start out with a clean forum.

This all seems fair enough.

Do you have some sanction for persistent transgressors? Maybe barring them from the forums temporarily or permanently?

Who will be moderating the forums?

Markku and I will be moderating the forums, since Jakob will be leaving the project on thursday.

It might be a good idea temporarily banning people, but it is not supported by the BOINC forums at the moment. I will look into it.

Thanks,

Also check out new rules concerning inline pictures in the posts. It's a good time to clean up your signatures now.

You can use one inline-picture in your post, but the size may not exceed more than 50kb. This is because there are lots of people without broadband internet connection and who need to pay for the bandwidth. Browsing the message boards with many/big images will be slow and expensive for such users. Big collection of images also make message boards unclear. If you really need to share multiple pictures with others, just use a hyperlink.

The boinc devs. have added an upgrade for the forums which allows people to show all images in the forums as a link so they don't get hit with the large image downloads. Are there plans to upgrade the boinc forums here to add the new options?

Yes, at some point.

A few modifications to rules:

a) You may use multiple/bigger pictures in Cafe LHC.
b) You must use English in message boards other than Cafe LHC.

Generally speaking, control is more relaxed in Cafe LHC. But this also means that control is more aggresssive in other forums than Cafe LHC.

It's hard for me to believe that we are having too strict rules. If somebody thinks that the rules in "official" message boards are too strict, he/she is free to post in Cafe LHC.

Official message boards = all message boards/forums except Cafe LHC.

However, if somebody is able to give out good arguments against some rule currently announced, feel free to speak out.

I doubt too many people are going to be discouraged from joining this project because of the rules. To me, the rules are common sense which apply to all the projects (except for the image limitations rule). The only reason someone would be discouraged is if they disagreed with a rule.

If someone decides not to join because of a rule currently on the list then I doubt it's someone we'd really want here.

I sincerely hope that the staff posts a rule on flooding the forums with multiple postings of the same title. ;)

From the rules page:
>>we have discovered that it becomes very time consuming to read through the forums to find the interesting posts.

From this thread:
>>Markku and I will be moderating the forums

How will this work in practice? If it's too time consuming to read the forums maybe you need to appoint some external moderators.
