Nothing wrong with a few common sense rules. I'm all for it.

"b) You must use English in message boards other than Cafe LHC. "

I was under the impression that CERN is mainly a Euro project, so telling the French, German, Italian posters not to post seems a bit extreme.

That might very will be. But English, wether it be the Queens' English or the American English, has been the 'Common', or universal, language since about the 1960's or '70's.

So it would make sence to use the language. That is commonly used in all countries, for various technological industries.

Although I think there should a rule against spamming the Official forums in any form.

Ja, CERN er et europisk projekt, men der er mange flere sprog og medlemslande end blot de store du nvnte og hvorfor skulle de s ikke kunne bruges?

Joo, olen samaa mielt. Ei tst tuu mitn jos kaikki rupee skeltmn omaa kieltn.

:)

My point in English: there are so many languages in Europe that if we didn't have a common language here, it would be very had for most of the people understand even most of the messages. Especially from administrative point of view, we must understand what is being said so that we can answer questions and keep control of things.

One more thing. Now you have cleared most of the boards, yet on my account page the number of posted messages remains the same (though the link leads to the short list of non-deleted posts)

<------- And look here! This number is also too high! Or should it be the counter of all posts, whether deleted or not?
I have similar problem on S@H boards, but there the number is too low (and not updating) ;-)

Could we add a request that all posts wrap? Some of us do not have extremely wide screens, and having one post that doesn't wrap makes reading the entire thread an exercise in horizontal scrolling.

It looks like even in english we will never find a fitting level.
Very sorry to be a human and not your toy.
Unfortunately having your level, "Markku Degerholm"
from "LHC@home Admin". Are you Mister Perfect???

>we must
No. You are wrong. We must nothing.
We ("I") are/am here for free, thinking doing something good. An having a kind of fun.

I see some portion of "we are the best and every body else is nothing" at some "LHC@home Admin.

This is not the best way to communicate with you best friends and supporter.

Dear "LHC@home-Admins" sit back, reflect and think about where you are without
all the nice people supporting LHC...

An other thing, Mr perfect,

You know, I'm Swiss.

In our country we are very polite and very tolerant.
We do accept other opinions even when we do not share them.
We are educated and listen to other opinions.

If YOU claim, only english, so remember where you are.
You are in switzerland. Perhaps you never have been outside ouf your clouds, but in switzerland we do speak german/french/italian and rumanch. English is NOT a official language here, even if the cern project is international.
Even if you see it in a other way.

you are as a guest in switzerland.

To reduce only English, is in my eyes, a sign of intolerant and proove of less thinking. Thinking of only 2 Pico.

You know, english is for the most people a foreign language, we are doing
EFFORTS for putting words here.

If I have a question and a (friendly) person can give me the answer in german or french or even in english, the answer is in foreground.

Mr perfect, are you understunding this?

Reading the posting around, the is a lot of work to do,
at LHC, better not speeking so laud.

no reply needed, a mentioned I do not have your requested level, due I'm human

Mit freundlichen Grssen
Salutations amicale
regards.

don't ride such a high horse, you will fall deep.

This is a noble effort. I am not sure of the moral success of policing. Strive to be gentle.
What ever results after the dust settles, are there any plans to make these Rules universal to all BOINC Forums?
If there has to be rules, they should apply across the board. (Pun Intended)
BTW. Ric is correct! Can you impose English? Yes it will become the universal language.
Maybe.
But it can not be imposed. No. It must be accepted.
All policing must be accepted.

a) In my country politicians have learned to never, never , ever start a language debate like you are.
b) This is not the EURO WIDE WEB but the WORLD WIDE WEB.
c) People will use the google translator to english and that's even worse.
d) At the UN.

The six official languages of the United Nations include those of the founding nations: Chinese, English, French, Russian. In addition, two widely spoken tongues -- Arabic, Spanish -- were added later. All formal meetings are interpreted at least in these official languages. And all official documents, in print or online, are translated in all six languages.

e) ENGLISH is far from being universal. (Some people think it's superior).

f)I Agree. But I only know french and english.

You are in switzerland. Perhaps you never have been outside ouf your clouds, but in switzerland we do speak german/french/italian and rumanch. English is NOT a official language here, even if the cern project is international.

None of us said we speak perfect english. In fact English is only the mother
tongue for one of the people on the LHC@home team. We do not expect you to speak perfect english either. If you are not sure you have written your english correctly you can add the same post in whatever language you chose, and maybe we will understand that. We are limiting to english simply to reduce the workload of reading the forums. I can read english at five times the speed i can read french.

You must if you do not want your posts deleted. :)

We never said that or implied it.

No i am not in switzerland, nor is the server. We are in France. ;-)
And no in switzerland you do not speak german/french/italian and rumanch,
in my experience you speak french OR swissgerman(Should be a separate language i think it is harder to understand this than dutch and i speak german) OR italian OR rumanch.

Yes, but others would perhaps like to know the answer if only they had an idea what you were talking about. You are welcome to put your question in CafeLHC or ask someone there to translate it for you. We would also like to follow the discussion, and we all speak english.

I agree with the admins on this one. If we allow all languages to be written on these forums, the same questions will invariably be asked again and again, as people won't understand each other's posts.
If I ask a question in english, I expect people to answer me in english too.

I don't care if someone unable to write english uses a translator and asks in two languages in the same post, as long as we can get a general meaning of what he wants. And if people can answer him in both languages all the better. But please do make the demand that the posts must also be in english.

You might do like one of the Mac forums does. The main forum is English only, but they have a couple other forum categories for other languages.
That might help please everyone?

that is what we are suggesting. English or at least english + other posts in the main forums. In CafeLHC and Team Invites knock yourselves out but try to be creative. I am looking forward to the first posts in Novial.

Apparently some people are oblivious to the rules, or they think they don't apply to them.
