Have you ever had several computers sitting on a large cabinet and when you stand up to check how some of the other computers are doing for Cern and as you turn a computer decides to mysteriously crash to the carpet on the floor about 3 feet?

Well HAL 5777 did that tonight and as usual the old HD crashed and refuses to work again and as close as I get is it asking for drivers to boot and also will not even let me boot up or install via the OS disc.

It took me a couple days to bring this thing back to life a few months ago and it was running great until this happened.

Last time I had to replace the HD for some reason and I got a new one and then it refused to let me install the OS via the disc without the drivers for the bios of this particular pc.....but after HOURS of trying to let me partition AND start the install it finally started and of course hours later (the next day) it was done and then hours of d/ling Boinc and all the thousands of vdi MB for each project and all the other programs and the several hundred Windows Updates you have to do if you use the Win7 disc to start with.

(good thing you couldn't hear or read any of my cuss words)

After all of this I just got online on this pc and ordered a replacement since at the same time my 8-core laptop is in the shop........that beast has been running 24/7 for almost 5 years here (and vLHC) and the only problem is ASUS had to put a cheap and pitiful ac/dc jack on the side since I leave it plugged in 24/7 and never even move it at all or use that battery.....wth they don't make these so they can just run plugged in without having a battery installed is beyond me.......unless they have stock in the battery company.

I had a local place do the job even though I have had this laptop apart myself just to check the fan and clean the dust.......it seems hard until you do it once.

BUT the repair guy acted like it is major surgery and told me he can't guarantee he can solder it on the EDGE of the board without destroying it/

Sounds like he needs to go to school and learn the basics of doing soldering on a circuit board.......yeah I should have just found the part and did it myself.

I sure as......the Higgs Boson will not buy a lottery ticket or make a Vegas bet.....since I have the luck of that egg guy sitting on the brick wall.

(second one over from the right side)

Well I have a replacement for HAL 5777 now (HAL_5778)

But as usual I have to do the Windows Updates and then d/l Google Chrome

Now am trying to get my slow DSL to d/l Boinc but I might have to cancel the current d/l since it is just sitting there stuck at 2.7MB of the 9.1 at zero d/l speed

Then of course try to get the current VB + Ext Pack to d/l and install

THEN d/l the LHC mile long vdi and the rest

Eventually this machine will be running with a Intel 3.4 quad core with 4 threads for the 8-cores and 24GB ram ......wish it had a SSD but right now will be happy just getting Boinc to d/l and run so I can do the VB d/l
