Message 28584 - Posted: 20 Jan 2017, 22:11:49 UTC

hi
Can anyone post the stages or process they have to running vbox tasks?

I have 6 win 10 boxes, 2 6850s and 4 5960s all have vbox 5.1.14 on board.
plus they have all been updated, firewall exclude for the Bionic Dir. plus the latest Bionic software. all running Win 10 home with 16gig DDR4 ram.

I have tried over the last 12 hrs to get those tasks going and best is 2.5hrs but the CPU load is 20% at best. sixtrack tasks run at 100% load.

So please simple stage setup.

Cheers

Try first with deselecting "Run test applications" and for the VM-applications select only Theory in your project preferences.

Hi
did that, was running 5 tasks on a I7 5960 all have failed with
1073740791 (0xC0000409) STATUS_STACK_BUFFER_OVERRUN
they did reach 1% in 11 mins about twice as long as would be expected.
have three more on a I7 6850 that have reached 1% in 11mins, still very low load on CPU.
will leave them over night
Cheers

It looked like you connected with the Condor and then lost it.

Now you have several computers running and I can't check them all now but it looks like you have quite a few running and have made it beyond the HTCondor ping part......so maybe you are staying connected for some reason.

BTW do you try starting all of them at the same time??

I know by lots of experience that VB doesn't like you starting all 6 tasks at the same time especially if you do that with all of your pc's on the same internet connection.

3am here so......I have to check all of mine and go pretend I am asleep

He seems to have several jobs running on three different machines at present, and none unclaimed:

Hi
only one task was active on any of my machines.
A observation:
almost all of the top computers doing work with this project use Win 10 or win 7 Pro/Server or variation of. This leads me to the conclusion that Hyper-V is necessary to get these tasks to run. win 10 home OS does not have this.

It is a complete waste of my time and resources to try to run these simulations with a home OS.

I may upgrade one of my PCs to Pro or Enterprise just to see if it solves the problem. perhaps there needs to be a note in the FAQ that simulations need a certain OS.

Cheers

Mine are all the basic Windows 10 Home version and work perfect.
Same with my Windows 7.
Even my good old XP Pro

Work fine here and have at vLHC for 6 years

Wrong conclusion. It's just the opposite. Machines running Hyper-V are not able to run VM's from this project with VirtualBox.

Not sure what's the reason of your troubles, but I see that you don't have VirtualBox Extension Pack installed.

Yes CP THAT is the problem indeed.

HM, not shure, if you are right.

YES, ExtensionPack is needed for RemoteConsole, but is RemoteConsole really needed to finish the tasks successfull ? I'm not shure

Yeti,Yeti,Yeti.....I posted a copy of the error from his tasks stderr it isn't me saying you need to look at your Console.......unless you like to see if tasks are actually going to connect the server, get credentials, and get that HTCondor ping.

Hi
Vbox 5.1.14 extension installed
I do want this to work, if only I could get some tasks. there is 100 sitting on the server.
Yes there are PCs like mine working, BUT I have no idea how many tasks are being run at once, or how much Ram.
normally I can run full load on all Bionic projects. all PCs are liquid cooled so temp is not a problem.
Now how about some tasks
Cheers

For Atlas@Home I have made a detailed Checklist, how to bring it to work

If you are interested, you could switch over to Atlas@Home and try to get it working. If Atlas@Home works fine on your PC, it will be an easy switch to other VB-Projects here

We should elevate this to the main FAQ page.

We generally suggest trying with Theory first as it requires fewer resources.

This would be a great honour, but I'm not shure if it is the best for the Checklist and the User. I have to keep the checklist up to date and I like it very much that users can post questions and can subscribe to the thread

I'm with you if LHC@Home is handing out WUs, but there was a big problem at the weekend
