I've lost track of the version of VB that we should be using. I am running VirtualBox version: 5.1.4r110228.

Is that good or do I need to upgrade?

Thanks,
Jim

Is there an easy way to load it on Linux Ubuntu machines? I'm a Linux newbie and it isn't listed in the Synaptic installer list.

Instructions for Linux are found at https://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Linux_Downloads. Ubuntu is a Debian-based distribution, by the way.

If you're happier with a GUI, under Gnome you can use GDebi. You may have to install this (use Synaptic) if it isn't in the Ubuntu version you've got. Once you've installed GDebi, just use it to run the .deb file. It will tell you if there are any missing dependencies (unlikely). Then you should find your new VBox appears in the Synaptic list. You can remove it from there when you want to "upgrade", using GDebi to install the new version.

Edit. Don't forget you'll need to install the Extension Pack, too. I normally download this separately but you should be able to do it from within VBox. It may prompt you if you have an old (incompatible) version.
