I have SixTrack tasks in ready-to-report state with elapsed times of 10, 12, 23, and 24 seconds. Many others are in the 50-something minute range. Is this expected? Or is there something wrong with the very quick runs? Just curious. |

Tasks that end that quickly are said to represent simulations where the particles did not stay focused and hit the wall. They are normal. Some batches of tasks seem to have a relatively high percentage of very quick tasks while other batches seem to have a small percentage. 6 bangers are for wussies. |

Yeah, the goal of the SixTrack simulations is pretty much to find out how far out we can place the particles before they get lost by hitting the walls. This happens because at some amplitude, nonlinearities in the machine (magnet errors etc.) causes the particle amplitudes to grow exponentially. This is known as the "dynamic aperture" of the machine. We can then study different optics settings, the effects of imperfections in the construction of the machine and in various equipment etc. |
