Thanks for your earlier reply to my email, Eric. I have set my pcs not to get any new LHC tasks until the uploading works - I guess that's the wisest course. Good luck with it.

Hey, numbnut, what we need to hear is that you got whoever it is that can fix this on the phone 2 minutes ago and he's on the case NOW. The only thing you should be hoping for is that we don't all detach this sorry excuse for a project and send you begging for a grant from Bill and Melinda Gates so you can PAY FOR YOUR TASKS TO BE CRUNCHED.

This project has, from day one, been the most f*cked up waste of CPU time in all of BOINCdom. First it was that braindead IR > minQ policy, now you're STILL INSERTING RESENDS AT THE TAIL OF THE QUEUE and you're dumping tens of thousands of tasks into the queue when it's quite obvious the system can't handle it. Then you walk away and don't check on it for days. You should be crunching these tasks yourself so that you can see if the server's fallen over. You should be reading this forum at least twice a day to see if others are encountering problems. Instead you go hide and... what?.... choke yer chicken?

Seconded. Rude, ill-informed, and uncalled-for. I was wondering how long it would be before the self-described sock puppet revealed its true nature. [But I did enjoy the joke].

I, like everyone else, have tasks waiting to upload. Currently 47, in my case. And none of them will reach deadline before 28 October - still over four days away. If anyone is on the brink of losing even one second of CPU time - and I sincerely doubt it, given the 'batched' nature of recent work releases - then it's their own silly fault for being greedy with cache sizes, and not completing work in a timely fashion as requested by the project. Contrary to some people's evident wishes, this scientific research project isn't simply a video game - and it shouldn't be judged by those standards.

But it was my own solution to be involved in the LHC project.

I believe because of nature of issue deadlines would be extended/corrected so nobody loose.

Meantime I still wondering how I get credits for 19, 20, 21 and 22 Oct if issue with everyone's upload persist since 18th?

This is a Volunteer project to donate your computer time. Sometimes there are system issues and from time to time, every project has issues of one sort or another. After a while they get corrected and life moves on. No one is handing out cash prizes for crunching numbers. There is no Smack talk. This is about making a better world for all.

So, please try to be a little couth when issues occur. If you had a bad day, go get some exercise, you'll feel better. If you want to complain. Drop the project, there are 116,639 other volunteers who will be understanding and civil when it comes to technical issues when dealing with analyzing data from the most complex machine ever created by man.

So unless you can plan to fly to the servers and fix the problems yourself, !!!SHUSH!!!

manager myself. I have informed the sysadmins (who should know anyway).
I believe we should be able to recover and upload the results and the work
done will not be lost. Eric.

That is how it works at almost every project except this one. As I said a week or more ago, henry is a sockpuppet. The real me has been crunching this project for 2 years longer than you so I am quite aware of what has been going on here, what the problems are or have been, what has been changing, who has been driving change here and how they've been driving it. I preach patience and understanding and go put of my way to educate myself and fellow crunchers about the problems projects face and the hurdles encountered when projects attempt to solve those problems. I defend projects that are actually trying to do something about their problems vociferously. These loonies are doing nothing about their problems other than apologizing and promising change which, as we can plainly see, never comes. I won't defend them.

This project was one of the first to adopt the BOINC platform. IIRC it was either this project or Rosetta that adopted BOINC next after SETI. Apart from improvements to their application, they have steadfastly resisted every badly needed change until someone makes a big stink about it and embarasses the hell out of them. I don't like being rude but their flippant attitude about the value of our resources is rude and insulting too. They won't learn by themselves, they ignore discussion and help given to them free of charge by knowledgeable, kind-hearted volunteers and I've had enough of it. Kind words don't help around here so let's resort to the tried and proven cussing, yelling and rude insults. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do.

The rest of you can do what you do best and continue kissing butt and thanking them for the opportunity to have them pee your resources down the drain when there are plenty of other projects who need them badly. No, we don't seem to have lost any CPU time this time but we are not out of the woods yet. Once the "disk full" problem is rectified and uploads resume it's entirely possible the works could collapse again under the weight of the thousands of hosts that will be hammering the server trying to upload results, in spite of the exponential backoff thing.

We have all seen numerous projects startup, debug and run right in far less time and with far less funding, personnel and server resources than this project has. If they can do it then these guys can do it too.

You're good! A red herring and a butt kiss rolled into one. The fact is the complexity of the LHC has nothing to do with the "complexity" of issuing tasks and maintaining enough room on the server for the results.

Why would anyone fly to the servers to fix the problem? If they gave me, adrianxw or any one of a number of other people here an account, login and requisite permissions we'd fix the problems from the comfort of our own homes and monitor the situation properly to prevent similar problems in the future. So SHUSH yourself, noob.

If Log file growth is going to be a continuing Issue...

I have have this type of issue myself -- 3 years of mysql logging filled the separate logging partition.

Linux with the WEBMIN Administrator installed. has a resource "System/Log_file_rotation".
And that has a feature "Email log file before deleting?" for an specified log_file.

So just email it everyday, to somewhere like "LHClogfiles@Gmail.com".

And they all lived happily ever after in that far away NSA email land....

It has been fixed, my results are being sent right now ! :)

Prolly the NSA spooks broke in and fixed it for them.

Problem with permissions on the log_boinc05 directory fixed.
Results are being uploaded successfully so little if anything
will be lost. Why problem? I have bee checking the space
available and I looked at the permissions but I didn't know
about the "s" bit. Why? Finger trouble? Will of course try
and find out. Eric.
