Getting these errors for some time.
from
Mon 21 Oct 2013 11:02:27 PM EDT | LHC@home 1.0 | Started upload of w2_jobslhc31b_15cm_145_w2__6__s__62.31_60.32__18_20__5__52.5_1_sixvf_boinc10229_0_6
Mon 21 Oct 2013 11:02:29 PM EDT | LHC@home 1.0 | [error] Error reported by file upload server: can't open log file '../log_boinc05/file_upload_handler.log' (errno: 9)

until

Tue 22 Oct 2013 06:40:58 AM EDT | LHC@home 1.0 | Started upload of w2_jobslhc31b_15cm_145_w2__6__s__62.31_60.32__18_20__5__45_1_sixvf_boinc10228_1_9
Tue 22 Oct 2013 06:41:00 AM EDT | LHC@home 1.0 | [error] Error reported by file upload server: can't open log file '../log_boinc05/file_upload_handler.log' (errno: 9)

so- about 7 hours worth of lots (84) of uploads stalled in project backoff..

I have tried manual 'retry now' with negative results.
Anything else we can try?
Or, just wait until filespace made on server?

Thanks!
Jay

The server reports it is out of filespace but don't believe it. There is usually room for a few more if you jiggle the files on the disk when the upload starts. The jiggling helps the files wiggle in just a little bit closer which frees up millions of bits the OS carelessly leaves between files. It's sort of like "remote defragging on the fly". Details of the technique follow.

If you live in the northern hemisphere the lefthand rule applies. Clench your ethernet cable in your left fist like you would clench a rope but not too tight. With your thumb pointing along the cable and toward the modem/router/switch, slide your fist back and forth along the cable in short, rapid strokes. When you feel you have established a comfortable rhythm you should click the retry upload button.

If you live in the southern hemisphere the righthand rule applies. Clench your ethernet cable in your right fist like you would clench a rope but not too tight. With your thumb pointing along the cable and toward the modem/router/switch, slide your fist back and forth along the cable in short, rapid strokes. When you feel you have established a comfortable rhythm you should click the retry upload button.

The effect of the back and forth fist motion speeds up some data bits and slows down others which causes the data bits to bump into each other and shake around. The technical term is "bit banging" and I think it's easy to see how it works. It's like when you dump a bunch of macaroni into a box. If you shake the box a little the macaroni settles and then you have room for a little more. Using the left hand imparts a clockwise spin on the data in addition to the bit banging. That clockwise spin helps bits originating in the north to "wiggle in" even easier. The right hand imparts an anti-clockwise spin on data which is the appropriate spin for bits originating south of the equator. If you live on the equator either method will work. Some users who live exactly on the equator have reported that using the left and right hands simultaneously actually doubles the data transfer rate though the reason why that would work is unclear and the reports have not been verified.

Regarding this:
The effect of the back and forth fist motion speeds up some data bits and slows down others which causes the data bits to bump into each other and shake around.

In other words: A good handjob will free some space and lets the data pass through the bottleneck?
What's to do if I'm connected with Wifi? do I need to get my hands on the cable tangle somewhere?

The server reports it is out of filespace but don't believe it. There is usually room for a few more if you jiggle the files on the disk when the upload starts. The jiggling helps the files wiggle in just a little bit closer which frees up millions of bits the OS carelessly leaves between files. It's sort of like "remote defragging on the fly". Details of the technique follow...

Alternatively wait until Sunday. In lots of countries the clocks go back an hour which has the effect of squeezing everything that's being transmitted down the lines by putting the last hour's data on again and so putting more pressure on the bits being written to the disks. Because binary data is only in the ones, that compresses all the sequences of zeroes into fewer, or even just one, zero so data takes up less space. Then when the data from the hour-that's-written-twice is over, it is deleted and voila! there's free space on the disks.

We should really put the clocks back every weekend.

87 completed Tasks waiting for Upload since early this morning; 19 of those since early last evening. Status column shows Upload pending for all 87 with no indication there is any problem.

So what if I'm female and have a concave ethernet cable? Does the left-hand rule still apply? LOL

The traditional approach for all women regardless of cable geometry is to get a man to do it for her. For women to learn to do it for themselves would be empowering to say the least so hey!... you go girl!

Unfortunately so far there have been no female test cases at all let alone concave cable cases, so I'm afraid I'm not sure what to recommend to you. It's a great learning opportunity however. Could you turn on your webcam so we can observe while you try various methods?

Indeed. This the InterTubes. We can all have our own thread. Even more so since it seems there's no admin bods watching.

Unless my trifocals need replacing, wouldn't the above indicated error mean that the "log file" the upload server is trying to write to is either missing or the application trying to write to it doesn't have enough "permission" to do so?
