I like to use some projects as back-up projects, by using the "0" resource share method. But when I set it to zero for this project, it keeps getting changed back to 100. Please fix.

A similar question was asked in another forum recently and the answer was because the project in question is using an older version of the boinc server code. In that case the lowest you can set it is 1 (or maybe 5).

But it was then pointed out that any tasks from the resource share 1 project, when downloaded, would immediately run in high priority until it was basically nearly complete, before coming out of high priority mode and switching to another task.

So I guess, erm, kinda stuck with the way it is for now :)

I thought the server version was new enough to use CreditNew. The "0" resource share was implemented a long time before that.

Yup, [trac]changeset:20286[/trac] is well within the version claimed to be used here: Server software version: 22168.

20286 was the first entry in BOINC SVN that enabled zero resource share. As far as I know, the project doesn't need to enable this.

does setting the resource share to 0.001 works for you?

Just to say, we are not on the very latest boinc server version, because of
some administrative reasons. Nothing serious and will be sorted out.
(If you wonder - std CERN update program for software dependencies doesn't
include the latest versions needed for boinc server installation.)

Resource "0" is very different from resource "0.001". The behavior completely changes.

With resource 0, work is requested *only* when there is no work available from projects with a RS > 0, *and* when the queue is completely empty. And even then, it does not attempt to fill the queue up to the defined amount. It pulls just enough to keep each cpu thread (or gpu) busy right now.

With a RS at 0.001, it would try to load up a full queue. And that becomes a problem when the normal projects have work again. Now you have to burn off all that queue from the backup (RS 0) project, or go in and manually delete it.

I've just tried it, setting it to 0.001 on the web does the trick, Boinc manager reports the resource share as zero.

EDIT TO ADD THE FOLLOWING:
The reason I myself want a resource share of zero is that I only want to crunch LHC@Home at the weekend. Like zombie67 I don't want the cache to fill up with tasks. It would be OK except that I couldn't suspend the tasks to continue crunching the following weekend, as the deadlines are so short.

so, it works then and RS can be set to 0 with this trick.

You don't have to explain why you need it. We appreciate your contribution.

This brings me to another thought, however. Physicists complain about the long
outfliers of a study. The bulk of first jobs comes quickly, then last jobs take very long, since they are sitting and waiting somewhere.
We may need to tune the system to squize tighter deadlines.

I would like to collect opinions about this first.

Wait. Showing "0" just may be just be rounding. For the thing to work properly, it needs *actual* zero. It is a server functionality thing. Not a "close enough to zero" thing. the server either has it installed or not.

Please advise.

OK here's a follow up. With the resource share set as it is (at 0.001) the LHC task already on my system completed. I deleted two others to see what would happen as I have a ten day cache. What I was expecting was once that task completed was quite a few workunits to download. They didn't. Only one task downloaded and immediately started running at high priority.

The task has just started so I'll keep an eye on Boinc as to what happens next.

So still no resolution? If even one task is downloaded when other options are available, then it is not working on the "0" logic. Is there some reason the project is running on ancient code base?

All I can say is even with the resource share set to 0.001, what happens is a task downloads, starts running at high priority and runs that way until it's finished. Then another task is download and runs as the previous. That is with the cache set at zero. (Please note one task per core). So at the moment for a backup project it doesn't work. Unless you want to faff around with NNT and all that :).
