On Einstein@home the two first participants are really two Open Science grids, which modified their programs so that they could crunch the WUs of Einstein@home. Maybe this is the way to go for scientific institutions like CERN which do not want to entrust their precious data to volunteers like us.

I finally got re-attached to LHC. I hadn\'t even been able to reach the website since sometime last year. It looked like my IP address was blocked for some reason. I compared traceroutes with my teammates and mine always stopped at the last hop (161.23.3.204) before the LHC server while theirs continued on to hepboinc.ph.qmul.ac.uk [138.37.50.115]. Glad to see whatever it was got cleared up.

Thanks for the work you do. I\'m looking forward to being able to crunch WUs again.

BUG FOUND (REPRODUCIBLE)
==============================

Hi,

I\\\'m not sure if this should be filed here but with two new work units (Using SixTrack 4207.00) I received trying to view the graphics via BOINC\\\'s \\\"Show graphics\\\" button causes the work unit to immediately cease crunching and register as having a \\\"Computational Error\\\".

Hope this helps,

Rich

Well I was surprised today to check my machines and see they all had a couple LHC 6 tracks.

Glad I never use the screensaver so they should finish without the error.

Rapture:

What does this mean for volunteers who have been waiting a long time for new work? The announcement is not clear on this point.

Neasan:

I am unclear to your question as well.

For every person who posts a question there are a hundred others with the same question. If you have to be poked and prodded for more information, then that is the way it has to be. However, thanks for all your hard work!

Neasan, did you and Bigmac ever consider going the Linus Torvalds route and initiating a small project that the community itself would develop - at least as an experiment? Whether it is feasible or not and how many volunteers you would get is a very open question.

You mean the Particle Physics community? This is what we have been attempting (alongside applying for funding). If you mean the wider community i.e. you volunteers, we would still need input from particle physicists.

I am going to be making another push soon now that the LHC has settled down a little and find another application again.

i find this quiet an interesting discussion, specially when youngsters are so fascinated by science, willing to even help develop.
it might be an option to ask people of Milky-way, if no adaptive solution of their code could be a possible solution to support GPU, although i might have missed a key information that would make my assumption to be completely stupid :), but hell i am not a scientist or developer. just trying to bring new idea\'s, that would allow all boinc projects combine their forces and use the full power of worldwide volunteers. and power there is, you might be overwhelmed by all that GPU power, as noticed by Milky-way, there servers went down several times due to the speed in finished jobs, a 13h CPU job was finished in +- 40-sec to 3 minutes on ATI-GPU, i do not want to make publicity for ATI, anyhow nvidia also have GPU power (different) that is available.

i will leave the application requesting for work in the mean time. i will notice when the day comes and i hear my system is blowing to cool down thanks to workload of LHC

would be interesting to bring the speed of LHC on a fast analysis, but understandable that the information is hugh and might be a tremendous job to split in and have it send throughout the world.
but surely with the right people supporting your efforts of getting this online, you might find a solution in a longer term, reducing the work send out by preparing the bulk into partial calculated versions, that need to be calculated furthermore and only the outcome to be validated in a 3 way version for exemple.

hope to have launched some idea\'s.

with my best regards,

founder of Performance with Purpose

Last weak i have a nice conversation with a study colleague. He have a Hiwi job at a institute and works there with LHCb datas. The told me, that he have there a nice cluster :)

Over the files he say, that they are real 4 TB! huge. On my questen if he REALY work with this huge files, he answered, that at the beginning he tried it, but that was toooo slow. So now he split the files into 500 MB partes and let them crunch on the cluster. He say a big problem was, that the 4 TB files are very bad to handle and have a special file format, that bring some problems.

He also say, that they will get a new cluster, what kind of cluster he didnßt know, but from somebody else, i heared, that the institut will get a GPU-cluster.

So i hope, that LHC@home will get a new chance to help.

Evening all,

Any information on an open-source project to port the Fortran 6-track code to something more current? I admit I skimmed the majority of the thread!

For what it\'s worth, I\'m a geophysicist programming under .NET (we all have crosses to bear, eh?). It would be nice to start a side project looking into OpenCL or CUDA while we wait for more WU.

Hi

I have installed Bionic and LCH@home on my PC but I am not receiving any work/tasks. Is there any work being sent out?

Go to the LHC+@home thread and follow the instructions by Ben Segal. About a hundred of us are working as alpha testers but first you have to get permission and install VirtualBox on your PC.

1) The LHC is back up and running you can follow its progress on the CERN twitter feed @CERN or the @lhcstatus feed. The latter is actually a scrape of the screens that the physicists watch to monitor the LHC machine.

2) LHC@home is also back. After a long quiet period we have new studies to work on. The executable has been updated (which is why there is not a Linux version available yet) and the project is now crunching simulations for the LHC upgrade. The team at CERN are working on the Linux executable and the team at QMUL are looking at the server code and are hoping to update that soon.

This is all I will say for the moment. However LHC@home is being used for beam studies from the LHC machine running actual data from the experiments is unlikely as the code has been written for the grid and the datasets are measured in 100s of gigabytes. We have been looking into other LHC uses for the project but it is not easy.
