And what news is that? A bogus notice placed some time ago that they are looking into the problem and dates of messages that aren\\\'t even valid? How hard is it to post an update with real dates that mean anything? Or to correct a programming mistake from over a month ago? Sorry but that\\\'s a rediculous amount of time to fix such errors.

I had high hopes for this project when it finally returned after a year hiatus. But without the great screen saver (that got many of it\\\'s members interested to start with), it\\\'s just another one of the poorly organized projects with no clear purpose or updates from it\\\'s staff. It\\\'s too bad no one at LHC is really concerned enough to keep anyone informed or even to do a simple job of updating the front page with valid dates that anyone can understand. Updates should be at least weekly and not be so vague as to be meaningless.

It\'s \"staff\"? You mean one retired physicist, and two unpaid volunteers who do this in their spare time? So I made some mistakes typing in some dates, the world isn\'t going to end. A solution is being looked at but currently our day jobs (i.e. the actual LHC, you knwo that thing that is now up and running after ~20 years of planning) is kind of taking a lot of our time because we are paid to work on that and our bosses expect us to do our jobs.

PS

Wasn\\\'t entirely clear on my last post. Is there even any plans to get get the screen saver fixed?

Who needs a screensaver? What we need is data to crunch.

I agree. I do not understand why people have their knickers in a knot about the screen saver. I will not use one (no matter how pretty it looks) and just set the screen to go blank.

Screen Savers eat valuable CPU cycles. Turn them off!

So no one should use anything you don\'t prescribe to? Well of course you don\'t use them so no one else should have the ability to do so either! I\'m so sick of this power cruncher mentality! Sorry, I didn\'t realize the moral majority had spoken. It\'s not a question of having data or a screensaver. If the programmers here were worth their salt they would have this solved by now.

Screen savers don\'t eat valuable CPU time if you use them right. I have three of my cores set processing BOINC which leaves plenty of time for screen savers and my other apps to run on the 4th. Sure I could probably get some more done if I dedicated yet another core to it or bought another computer and another and another. I could care less how much data is processed. Don\'t like screensavers? You don\'t have to use them at all. That\'s your right. But leave those of us who use them the ability to do so.

Sure the data being available is very important. But if you don\'t have the screen saver you\'ll never have the user base of those projects that do. LHC had one of the best screensavers on BOINC. But unfortunately it\'s current programmers find it easier to gut their existing program than to fix the error in their code that has stopped it from running. Over a month later and still not fixed.

I think that power crunchers have forgotten the main reason LHC got it\'s base of users was largely due to it\'s great screen saver attracting people to attach as well as the science possibilities. It\'s one of the poorest payers in credit so the power crunchers didn\'t get it started. Those who liked the way it looked and those that were interested in the science did.

Let\'s don\'t forget that the original purpose of BOINC isn\'t to crunch huge amounts of data. It\'s to allow users to use their idle computer time to do some good while they are not doing something else. It\'s not to have machines constantly computing on BOINC attempting to outdo the next guy.

I and a huge number of users on BOINC could give a d*** about how much quantity of data is processed. It\'s great if the computations can help science. Frankly this project shows little of that anyway as most of the data doesn\'t seem to be used to improve the science anyway. It\'s sad that the first thing that programers always forget once a project is well established is what got them the people trying their project in the first place. The graphics/screensaver in this case. Most users to BOINC start projects based on whether the project speaks to what they personally like in science or the way the project looks (screensaver).

Unfortunately BOINC is quickly becoming a \"MY processor is bigger than your processor\" kind of place. Lets don\'t forget that the reward of some entertainment from a screen saver is every bit as important to getting and keeping users.

My biggest beef with LHC is that they won\'t fix an existing part of their program just because the programmers are too involved in other problems to get it done. That\'s in addition to not having any work 99% of the time.

I have shelved LHC after waiting a year in anticipation of it\'s return to operation. Unfortunaltely it\'s still not running right and still doesn\'t communicate with it\'s forums on a regular basis. It also seems to have almost no support from the company (CERN) that employs it.

Unfortunately this is still a dead project after a year of down time. I had hoped for better. It\'s still a big disappointment. So now you can flame me all you want to as I\'m dettaching from this lifeless project and will not be back or post any longer.

Sorry to have dared to want an existing part of the LHC program fixed.

Added after original post:

I just saw the post from the forum manager. Sorry that you have an unpaid staff of 3 to do all this. Frankly that's not enough to maintain a company's server room let alone a project and forum like this. Sounds like this project has no support at all from it's parent. I am sorry for your lack of support from your company. But unfortunately, if the job can't be done with the resources and people provided, maybe it's time to say the project can't be done. But let's be honest. I can see now why you don't paruse the forums more often but do you really think over a month to fix a program problem is supporting the project? I don't care what is going on at CERN, just the project I signed up for. I can tell this project isn't going to get better till your bosses start to support this project. Sorry for being negative but I see the project not CERN. That's all that matters to me.

I do not understand why people have their knickers in a knot about the screen saver.

Join, for example, climateprediction.net and try to crunch ignoring their screen graphics. You will understand a lot. And very fast.
P.S. If You do not understand something today, this Your incomprehension may disappear tomorrow - this is factor of age only. ;-)

I\'m sorry you feel this way DGG. But you are entitled to your opinion. I for one am not strictly in it for the credit. I want to see science done and if I can help in any small way I will. For me the screen saver is a waste of CPU and memory resources and has never been a reason for me to join any of the projects I am working on. For me the biggest thing is getting a working Linux app going so that more of my machines can do work and if that means the screen saver problem gets pushed to the back burner so be it. There are lots of pretty screen savers out there if that\'s all you want.

I have not looked at the user stats in detail but I would think that like a lot of group projects 90% of the people have done 10% of the work and 10% of the people have done 90% of the work. Of that top 10% I would imagine that most if not more than 90% don\'t use the screen saver and don\'t care about it as it does not contribute to the science. There are a number of BOINCers that are doing this strictly for the credits and don\'t care about the science either but at least they are doing the work.

From what I have read in these forums this project is on very shaky ground and could be shutdown at any time. The fact that we have any progress at all right now is encouraging. I just hope they can find the time to get the Linux app working. It also sounds promising that the LHC will be shut down again in a couple of years for upgrades and repairs as that means that they will have a need (hopefully) for our CPU cycles to guide the work being done and evaluate different options for the upgrades.

Volunteering is, most of the time, a thankless job. I spent 11 years running a Contra dance series in Ottawa on my own before I got seriously thanked by the community and only after I was getting ready to get out of organizing and handing it off to a committee. Here at LHC The \"one retired physicist, and two unpaid volunteers\" deserve our respect and gratitude for doing as much as they have, not our scorn for not doing things as fast as we want or the way we want. And us as volunteers should not expect to get any recognition for our time spent and dollars (euros, dinars, yens or whatever you spend) spent working on the projects we work on other than the credits each project assigns. The project does not owe us anything and it is not our place to demand that they do.

The nature of BOINC is that there are multiple projects doing interesting science, math, biological and health related work and you can work on as many or a few as you want. That way if one does not have any work you can always do something for another project and keep your system(s) busy. I will continue to attach to projects I find scientifically interesting and work on any project that gives me WUs to work on.

Showing Graphics or using BOINC screensaver will cause exit status of -1 (0xffffffff)

Is there any progress being made on correcting the graphics bug? As I look around the boards I can see that it has become a big cause of a lot of wasted volunteer computer time.

It looks like - SCREEN SAVER IS KILLING THE TASKS!
No matter, is Show Graphics clicked or not.
6 of 7 tasks crushed, sad.

---Update---
SOS!!!
Unfortunately...
If Windows screen saver is set to BOINC, all the tasks are dying.
This effect appears at least on all machines with ATI video cards. No matter, which model. New or, for example, 3+ years old.

It will also happen on Intel onboard video card. (965)

So why doesn\'t the programmer just disable the \"offensive\" button and be done with it?

I just added LHC@Home to my BOINC tasks about a month ago, and quickly learned that WU\'s were few and far between. Then today I found that I\'d finally downloaded my very first two LHC task units, and was elated.

I quickly suspended work on everything else to allow these units full use of my CPU time. Never having seen the LHC graphics before, I quickly clicked on one of the units, and then clicked on \"Show Graphics\" to see what they looked like. For whatever reason then, the WU went to 100% complete about the same time. Well I thought, there is an odd coincidence - so I clicked on the other WU, and tried \"Show Graphics\" again. When that WU crashed, it was then apparent that there was a problem with the graphics part of the LHC software.

Now, after a lot of searching, I finally find this thread and understand the problem. I will now change my screen saver to something else besides BOINC, and will patiently wait to be blessed with another LHC WU or two, and I\'ll check these message boards from time to time, to see if this problem has gotten corrected by the volunteers we should be thanking instead of scolding.

I would suggest however, that for now, someone take just a few minutes to edit the description of the LHC@Home project wherever it appears, to include the information that in order to run this project without crashing the WU, you\'ll need to shut down your BOINC screen saver, and not press \"View Graphics\" while a LHC WU is running. Anyone interested in running this project is going to read the description of what it is, and this would at least give them fair warning.

I\'ve been running SETI@Home for many years now, starting with a computer that took about two weeks or more to complete a work unit. I do it for the science. I do however, enjoy the eye candy that the graphics provide as well.

It\\\'s not just a question of not clicking on the show graphics. If you use BOINC screen saver and it happens to have a LHC unit running it will still kill the work unit. Makes no difference if it\\\'s an ATI or NVidia Card.

To be honest if you take out the screen saver permanently, I and many others won\\\'t be doing crunching for LHC. The cool screensaver was what got my attention to start with.

So, let me see; if it was a choice between removing the screen saver which crashes the WU and makes it not even run, or leaving it in and having the WU and possibly BOINC go altogethr, you\'d chose the latter?

It\'d be far better for them to turn off the screensaver, then leave it in and have this. And as others have pointed out; with the status quo, they can\'t risk having the boinc screensavers on for other projects, lest the screen saver for this project alone kills things.

It\'d be far better for LHC to remove it, then have things as they are now; both for the tasks, as well as the users who want to use the screensaver for other projects.

Hmm. Seems to me that in a couple of fairly old posts that originally the LHC staff didn't want to use volunteer machines at all. With the savings made by not using an in-house super computer funds could be put to other uses. Now with the economy of so many countries in the dumps we may be seeing a resurgence of the in-house is better ideation. Dunno why, but the thought of sabotaged work units comes to mind. This is the first time I've heard of BOINC screen savers crashing things. Perhaps a look at the source coding for extraneous bits would shed light on the subject. And maybe interviewing the creator(s) of the work units by upper management would not be amiss also.

I'm running BOINC on two duo core laptops and don't use ANY screen savers, myself, and have no plans to do so. Got some nice wallpaper, however. LOL! So far the single work unit I have is processing nicely after a bunch of errored tries by others. Hope the errors are simply due to the screen saver issue!

Happy crunching!

Interesting comment Kibble! You know, there is a very simple fix they could do while they\'re taking a short break from their real science. They could just disable the \"Show Graphics\" button in BOINC.

I also run Milkyway@Home, and they don\'t have any graphics either. But, when you click on one of their WU\'s, the \"Show Graphics\" button stay\'s dimmed out, and it has no function.

Perhaps if the LHC@Home people were to ask the Milkyway@Home people how to do that, they might give them the code so they could do it as well. It would sure give them a big boost in successful WU runs, and who wouldn\'t want that.

.

I have an unusual idea:

Extract the LHC graphics code into a stand-alone "demo" screen saver (not associated with the BOINC screen saver or the BOINC manager.) -- i.e. on Windows it would be called something like LHCsaver.scr

Then strip the graphics code from the actual applications (SixTrack, etc.) graying out the Show Graphics button in the BOINC manager. This part has been suggested in many posts, including one by Neasan.

Finally, add some simple options to the stand-alone screen saver, like Username, Number of Loops, Number of ?, etc. and just run it when you want to see the oh-so nifty graphics. The disadvantage: Since it will always be a "demo", it will never show information associated with a real workunit. On the upside, you can use the LHC screen saver ...even when you don't have any workunits to crunch. A download link for the screen saver would be necessary; it could be added to the front page.

VoilĂ . Pretty graphics and no one (WU) gets hurt!

Yeah!!
