I\'m sorry you feel this way DGG. But you are entitled to your opinion. I for one am not strictly in it for the credit. I want to see science done and if I can help in any small way I will. For me the screen saver is a waste of CPU and memory resources and has never been a reason for me to join any of the projects I am working on. For me the biggest thing is getting a working Linux app going so that more of my machines can do work and if that means the screen saver problem gets pushed to the back burner so be it. There are lots of pretty screen savers out there if that\'s all you want.

I have not looked at the user stats in detail but I would think that like a lot of group projects 90% of the people have done 10% of the work and 10% of the people have done 90% of the work. Of that top 10% I would imagine that most if not more than 90% don\'t use the screen saver and don\'t care about it as it does not contribute to the science. There are a number of BOINCers that are doing this strictly for the credits and don\'t care about the science either but at least they are doing the work.

From what I have read in these forums this project is on very shaky ground and could be shutdown at any time. The fact that we have any progress at all right now is encouraging. I just hope they can find the time to get the Linux app working. It also sounds promising that the LHC will be shut down again in a couple of years for upgrades and repairs as that means that they will have a need (hopefully) for our CPU cycles to guide the work being done and evaluate different options for the upgrades.

Volunteering is, most of the time, a thankless job. I spent 11 years running a Contra dance series in Ottawa on my own before I got seriously thanked by the community and only after I was getting ready to get out of organizing and handing it off to a committee. Here at LHC The \"one retired physicist, and two unpaid volunteers\" deserve our respect and gratitude for doing as much as they have, not our scorn for not doing things as fast as we want or the way we want. And us as volunteers should not expect to get any recognition for our time spent and dollars (euros, dinars, yens or whatever you spend) spent working on the projects we work on other than the credits each project assigns. The project does not owe us anything and it is not our place to demand that they do.

The nature of BOINC is that there are multiple projects doing interesting science, math, biological and health related work and you can work on as many or a few as you want. That way if one does not have any work you can always do something for another project and keep your system(s) busy. I will continue to attach to projects I find scientifically interesting and work on any project that gives me WUs to work on.

Is there any progress being made on correcting the graphics bug? As I look around the boards I can see that it has become a big cause of a lot of wasted volunteer computer time.

It looks like - SCREEN SAVER IS KILLING THE TASKS!
No matter, is Show Graphics clicked or not.
6 of 7 tasks crushed, sad.

Unfortunately...
If Windows screen saver is set to BOINC, all the tasks are dying.
This effect appears at least on all machines with ATI video cards. No matter, which model. New or, for example, 3+ years old.

It will also happen on Intel onboard video card. (965)

i had the same prob with my notebook that use a nvidia gpu.
always when the sceensaver starts than error the wu.

I just added LHC@Home to my BOINC tasks about a month ago, and quickly learned that WU\'s were few and far between. Then today I found that I\'d finally downloaded my very first two LHC task units, and was elated.

I quickly suspended work on everything else to allow these units full use of my CPU time. Never having seen the LHC graphics before, I quickly clicked on one of the units, and then clicked on \"Show Graphics\" to see what they looked like. For whatever reason then, the WU went to 100% complete about the same time. Well I thought, there is an odd coincidence - so I clicked on the other WU, and tried \"Show Graphics\" again. When that WU crashed, it was then apparent that there was a problem with the graphics part of the LHC software.

Now, after a lot of searching, I finally find this thread and understand the problem. I will now change my screen saver to something else besides BOINC, and will patiently wait to be blessed with another LHC WU or two, and I\'ll check these message boards from time to time, to see if this problem has gotten corrected by the volunteers we should be thanking instead of scolding.

I would suggest however, that for now, someone take just a few minutes to edit the description of the LHC@Home project wherever it appears, to include the information that in order to run this project without crashing the WU, you\'ll need to shut down your BOINC screen saver, and not press \"View Graphics\" while a LHC WU is running. Anyone interested in running this project is going to read the description of what it is, and this would at least give them fair warning.

I\'ve been running SETI@Home for many years now, starting with a computer that took about two weeks or more to complete a work unit. I do it for the science. I do however, enjoy the eye candy that the graphics provide as well.

It\\\'s not just a question of not clicking on the show graphics. If you use BOINC screen saver and it happens to have a LHC unit running it will still kill the work unit. Makes no difference if it\\\'s an ATI or NVidia Card.

To be honest if you take out the screen saver permanently, I and many others won\\\'t be doing crunching for LHC. The cool screensaver was what got my attention to start with.

So, let me see; if it was a choice between removing the screen saver which crashes the WU and makes it not even run, or leaving it in and having the WU and possibly BOINC go altogethr, you\'d chose the latter?

It\'d be far better for them to turn off the screensaver, then leave it in and have this. And as others have pointed out; with the status quo, they can\'t risk having the boinc screensavers on for other projects, lest the screen saver for this project alone kills things.

It\'d be far better for LHC to remove it, then have things as they are now; both for the tasks, as well as the users who want to use the screensaver for other projects.

Hmm. Seems to me that in a couple of fairly old posts that originally the LHC staff didn't want to use volunteer machines at all. With the savings made by not using an in-house super computer funds could be put to other uses. Now with the economy of so many countries in the dumps we may be seeing a resurgence of the in-house is better ideation. Dunno why, but the thought of sabotaged work units comes to mind. This is the first time I've heard of BOINC screen savers crashing things. Perhaps a look at the source coding for extraneous bits would shed light on the subject. And maybe interviewing the creator(s) of the work units by upper management would not be amiss also.

I'm running BOINC on two duo core laptops and don't use ANY screen savers, myself, and have no plans to do so. Got some nice wallpaper, however. LOL! So far the single work unit I have is processing nicely after a bunch of errored tries by others. Hope the errors are simply due to the screen saver issue!

Interesting comment Kibble! You know, there is a very simple fix they could do while they\'re taking a short break from their real science. They could just disable the \"Show Graphics\" button in BOINC.

I also run Milkyway@Home, and they don\'t have any graphics either. But, when you click on one of their WU\'s, the \"Show Graphics\" button stay\'s dimmed out, and it has no function.

Perhaps if the LHC@Home people were to ask the Milkyway@Home people how to do that, they might give them the code so they could do it as well. It would sure give them a big boost in successful WU runs, and who wouldn\'t want that.

I have an unusual idea:

Extract the LHC graphics code into a stand-alone "demo" screen saver (not associated with the BOINC screen saver or the BOINC manager.) -- i.e. on Windows it would be called something like LHCsaver.scr

Then strip the graphics code from the actual applications (SixTrack, etc.) graying out the Show Graphics button in the BOINC manager. This part has been suggested in many posts, including one by Neasan.

Finally, add some simple options to the stand-alone screen saver, like Username, Number of Loops, Number of ?, etc. and just run it when you want to see the oh-so nifty graphics. The disadvantage: Since it will always be a "demo", it will never show information associated with a real workunit. On the upside, you can use the LHC screen saver ...even when you don't have any workunits to crunch. A download link for the screen saver would be necessary; it could be added to the front page.

Voilà. Pretty graphics and no one (WU) gets hurt!
