Me too :(
I\'ve never had the chance to see the graphics on the LHC projects mainly due to the lack of WU\'s but since they started again I couldn\'t resist having a look and when I did it killed the WU dead.

I\'m not using an ATI or Nvidia card but an Intel G45 onboard chip which shares system RAM. LHC is the only project I have had a problem with.

I guess if we keep killing the WU someone will get the hint and either fix or remove the graphic option, I would like to see the problem fixed myself.

Glad LHC is back anyway and for now I\'ll just leave it crunching.

We have been considering killing the graphics as they are a stumbling block when compiling. I'll pester bigmac and Alex.

Please put in the effort to repair the graphics rather than kill them. Not using it at the moment, just manually tried the graphics from nostalgia... oops. Anyway the screensaver maxed to 5 minutes has little drag on computation. It's nice to occasionally get a brief visual of which project is being crunched, and some eye candy.

Even if power crunchers do the bulk of BOINC work (?) many of "the masses" including most who never use the message boards, enjoy and are at least partially motivated by the screensavers. Good will and education wrt individual projects are real benefits of BOINC imo, it's not only the project results that are helpful. [2 cents]

The \"Show Graphics\" button is inactive for me. So I never had problems like this. I\'d like to have some graphics, but better no graphics than this problem.

OK we think we have a solution and it should go online once we have tested it.

Sadly it involves stripping out the graphics but this is a stop gap as the scientists want to get their work done and bigmac is on holidays as of today.

Once he is back graphics will become something for him to investigate.

I will keep you updated.

The tasks are still trying to activate screen graphics (when Windows screen saver is set to BOINC) and that is fatal every time. Sad...

Error when I push the show graphic button:
I meet the same problem as other folks after more than 9 hours.
Please see this: http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/workunit.php?wuid=3733705

By now there is no new application.

I\\\\\\\'m sorry about graphics problem; I have given priority to
getting a Linux executable and getting these very very long
beam to beam jobs working. I should also look at how
you could restart. I guess BOINC kills the work unit agter
this problem, but actually I have checkpoint/restart files
which mean it could just be restarted...........

Hi bicmac,
there will no checkpointint/restart of the result, due to the graphic program is in the computing program.
When one of both will crash, the result is lost.
This also happens, when the Boinc screensaver with LHC is activated.
The other projects with screensaver made a second program that only shows the sreensaver based on the data of the calculating program. If the screensaver does not work, the calculating program continues without error/crash.

Please consider to remove/deactivate the graphic part of the LHC program, then the problem is resolved.
I don\\\'t use the the Boinc Screensaver, but love the LHC graphic.
Matthias

Hi!
Does anybody know what\'s this?

1. It is evident that maximum count of attempts was reached.
2. It is possible that CONSENSUS was not found - no matter WU 3707725 has even 4 successful results...

Is there even any plans to get get the screen saver fixed?

Yes, there is... Just look to news on Front page. ;-)

And what news is that? A bogus notice placed some time ago that they are looking into the problem and dates of messages that aren\\\'t even valid? How hard is it to post an update with real dates that mean anything? Or to correct a programming mistake from over a month ago? Sorry but that\\\'s a rediculous amount of time to fix such errors.

I had high hopes for this project when it finally returned after a year hiatus. But without the great screen saver (that got many of it\\\'s members interested to start with), it\\\'s just another one of the poorly organized projects with no clear purpose or updates from it\\\'s staff. It\\\'s too bad no one at LHC is really concerned enough to keep anyone informed or even to do a simple job of updating the front page with valid dates that anyone can understand. Updates should be at least weekly and not be so vague as to be meaningless.

It\'s \"staff\"? You mean one retired physicist, and two unpaid volunteers who do this in their spare time? So I made some mistakes typing in some dates, the world isn\'t going to end. A solution is being looked at but currently our day jobs (i.e. the actual LHC, you knwo that thing that is now up and running after ~20 years of planning) is kind of taking a lot of our time because we are paid to work on that and our bosses expect us to do our jobs.

Who needs a screensaver? What we need is data to crunch.

I agree. I do not understand why people have their knickers in a knot about the screen saver. I will not use one (no matter how pretty it looks) and just set the screen to go blank.

Screen Savers eat valuable CPU cycles. Turn them off!

Join, for example, climateprediction.net and try to crunch ignoring their screen graphics. You will understand a lot. And very fast.
P.S. If You do not understand something today, this Your incomprehension may disappear tomorrow - this is factor of age only. ;-)
