Im his presentation of LHC@home at the Taiwan BOINC workshop of last April Ben Segal spoke of a CernVM virtual machine to be installed on volunteers\' PC enabling them to run CERN programs independently of their OS. Any news on this? Also the BOINC home page mentions a Citizens Cyberscience Center sponsored by CERN, UNITAR and Geneva University. Is this something real or only a public relations stunt? Tullio |

Hi Tullio I found this linkwhen I went to try to find out what you might be referring to about this topic…: http://boinc.berkeley.edu/trac/attachment/wiki/VmApps/vm_email.txt?format=raw |

Thank you very much. As a matter of fact, I am trying to understand how to install SUN\'s VirtualBox on my Linux PC and I have seen that it has been suggested for CernVM as an alternative to VMWare since it is free for private use. Thanks again. Tullio |

I wonder if you could use Microsoft\'s Virtual PC for Windows 7? It\'s meant for XP mode but.. |

I wonder if you could use Microsoft\\\'s Virtual PC for Windows 7? It\\\'s meant for XP mode but.. I\'ve read that some laptop makers have disabled it in the BIOS while installing Windows 7 on them. Why? Tullio |

Yes, but you have to register at wmware.com in order to get a free serial number. VirtualBox does not require any registration. Tullio |

Do you mean they disabled CPUs\' hardware virtualization features? (which it needs to function, unlike more general programs like VMWare) I don\'t know why they\'d do that, unless it\'s a licensing issue for certain versions of Windows 7. But surely there aren\'t any laptops out yet with Windows 7 - the OS isn\'t even out yet! Are you talking about announced models, or pre-orders? |

They mentioned Sony models, if I remember well. See here: Sony |

I found the article.. wow, that\'s crap. Chalk another one up to Sony, I guess. I mean I can see disabling it by default, but at least put it in the BIOS for people to enable \'at their own risk\'. |
