I\'d think we\'d all be prepared to live without any graphics if it meant we could crunch some real work sooner rather than later. Graphics is not a priority to most users.

Here, here! I don\'t run any of the screen savers as the eat too many CPU cycles or GPU (CUDA) cycles.

Would you consider instead of putting effort into doing simple graphics you could investigate making use of the graphics card GPU (CUDA) in a manner similar what is being done by Seti@Home.

Any chance you could post these updates on the front page in future?

Just checked in to see how the LHC was getting on and I find green shoots of new life in this project.

As a poster about the excessive redundancy employed by LHC@HOME I am thrilled to hear of the reduction to an initial replication of 2 and this new attitude towards communication.

I will rejoin this project as soon as you have work to do.

Don't worry about the graphics. I don't think us serious BOINCers care about graphics as it gets in the way of real crunching.

I would dearly love to play a small but meaningful role in this great project.

the work gets done on GRID.
which might be a smart choice, i have no comment on that.

CERN made a smart publicity move with lhc@home.
but with the LHC running soon and GRID lhc@home might be obsolete?

this is a choice CERN will make.

if this is the case then just pull the plug on lhc@home.
don't keep us waiting for nothing.

As far as I know lhc@home was never meant to crunch the data coming from the experiments. As explained somewhere else in this forum people would need to install a sppecialized OS to run the apps. I think most lhc crunchers use their computer for other purposes as well, so it won't be worth the effort to distribute it throug boinc I guess.
Maybe they need us to do some adjusting and culculating the beams again in the future. In the mean time there's a lot more to do on Boinc. I won't lay awake one second over it if this project would be dead. If they don't need my computers, then they're doing something else. If they need my computers, they're ready to receive the work.

I would suggest to anybody interested in the physical sciences to connect to Einstein@home for research on gravitational waves and astrophysics and to QMC@home for research in computer chemistry by the MonteCarlo method. The results so obtained are published in referred journals such as Physical Review and Journal of Physical Chemistry. The Einstein@home results were presented at the Amaldi Conference at Columbia University in New York last June.

Yes, but the BOINC devs are looking (in v.6.10 I think) to add the ability for BOINC to create and use client-side VMs. This would allow projects to distribute complete environments (including specific OSes, such as CERN\'s Scientific Linux) for their apps and WUs.

Of course, just because the capability will be there, doesn\'t mean LHC will use it; but I think some CERN people were involved with getting the BOINC devs to look into VMs in the first place...

We understand how frustrating it can be to loose years of work and we all hope it doesn't happen. You may want to make the "powers that be" aware that the BOINC user base has grown and now has more powerful computers available to them than when LHC@home initially kicked off and can put those machines to to good use doing useful science here.

What is it exactly that you need to fix the issues the update is giving you? You mentioned that you can\'t do anything without a test server. Can you load the environment to any server (e.g. a web server) or does it have to be of a specific form? I don\'t know too much about this stuff, I\'m an AI programmer for a game developer.
But if you have some specific needs to get the server running then there may be people still floating about in the community who can serve.

It seems very odd that CERN staff are heavily involved in adding VM capabilities to BOINC (see notes from the recent BOINC workshop), but LHC@home is left to rot.
