There are many other BOINC projects besides LHC@home and one can choose among them.We must thank SETI@home for this, even if the SETI Institute does not give data to them. But the Arecibo radiotelescope gives data not only to SETI@home but also to Einstein@home.

If I understand this well, then it means that LHC@Home will be used for stability of the project, and the GRID will process the results.

Correct?

The fact that there will not be enough work for everybody to crunch 24-24 is moot, as is the phase in the process where Boinc is inserted. The fact that there will be useful work is what counts.

Let us see what the Bells of Rome bring us this year.

Let\'s hope the Bells of Rome (or Geneva) will not be Jingle Bells...

Reviewing this thread I should also state
clearly that there is work to be done.
I\\\\\\\'ll get you the numbers as soon as I can
lay my hands on them. The problem is
we never get any results back, they get
back to the server and are rejected!!!
Yet result validation is trivial since
my work guarantees exactly reproducible
results on ANY PC. We also need a new
SixTrack executable to be installed as it
incorporates the latest effects we want to
model.

Just let me understand. You send us some WUs, we crunch them and send back the results but those are rejected by a BIG BAD SERVER?

Right now it does not seem feasible to
use LHC@home for processing this data. The
disk space, memory, and networking
requirements would overload your computer.

First, how much disk space, how much memory and how fast would the networking requirements on a home PC need be for it to be able to handle the data?

Second, could not the data be broken up into smaller chunks which could be processed on a home PC or would that effort be more than it is worth?

Well, LHC@home has always been used for
beam (stability) studies. So far so good.
The beams have been very stable during
operations so far. When the LHC is running,
and it will start again soon, the four major
experiments withe their giant detector systems
will record the data from the collisions
as the beams intersect. This data handled
by an online computer cluster is transmitted
to the Computer Centre at CERN for recording
on tape (yes still the cheapest way to
archive data) and sent out to the other GRID
systems. This data is then processed by
the GRID centres including CERN, in the
hope of finding the Higgs particle, if it
exists :-) . The point is that the analysis
requires even more data describing the
detector, the detector setup, etc etc
and the programs, databases are large.
Right now it does not seem feasible to
use LHC@home for processing this data. The
disk space, memory, and networking
requirements would overload your computer.
On the other hand since the GRID is/will be
full of this workload there are few resources
available for the accelerator studies.
Here is where LHC@home is outstandingly
useful....and has already carried out a
study of beam beam interaction, a very
interesting and worrying effect, which
could not have been done in any other
way. Hope this helps.

I\'ve tried to run a Virtual Machine with Solaris on my Linux box but the SETI app was much slower than its highly optimized Linux version. I used SUN VirtualBox.

STOP PRESS; running some test jobs, very short,
production work to follow. Windows only. Hopefully
a Linux executable next week....More news on Sunday
when I return to Geneva. Eric.

Excellent news! Waiting with baited breath. :)

WHOO! Got two! Suspension of other work to complete the LHC@home units was for less than a minute. LOL! At least the project proved it was able to communicate with the clients.

Amazing! My first two tasks in nearly a year! Sadly, they each lasted less than 15 seconds.

I trust the news will be about work for the Linux executable (and windoze for that matter), not just about the application.

Awesome, great to hear. With things on the app side getting in motion, is there any chance the server software will be updated? I know you don\'t have GPU apps or anything, but it seems very behind the times at the moment, and I\'m sure there have been some important bug fixes (maybe something to fix the odd backslashes on the forum as well? One can hope..).

Thanks Eric - that is great news.

I trust this means that the server (and validation) issues have been resolved?

*singing* gimme that, gimme that, gimme that thing...

Waiting for the 32 and 64Bit Linux apps. :-)))
