Is it possible for this project to inform us when a new batch of work units will be available? A number of other projects have X number of work units available and when they are all taken by members of the project management then posts a possible date that a new batch may be available. This will aid many members who do not like to have a project constantly pinging a web site for weeks and months at a time just to get a few work units.

The Similarity Matrix of Proteins (SIMAP) project uses this method.

Usually this is not possible at this project. Tasks are normally submitted by researchers directly to an automated system, the project admins usually find out about them at the same time we do.

Or at least that is the way it used to work.

People submitting jobs are in Vancouver, New York and Geneva. We have asked for a heads up on a few occasions and they never have but jobs get gobbled up so quickly by the volunteers it isn\'t too much of an issue or is it because you don\'t get enough work from us? We have tried to limit how many jobs people get and how often they can ask to get a good spread.

When I have time I could try and convert the amount of WUs up and waiting in to an RSS feed?

There have been quite a number of
WUs available in the last few days.
My computer is available 24/7 and
I have not received any. Who
decides who gets the available WUs?

I would be grateful for an answer
please.

Luck of the draw. It takes about 20k tasks before everyone gets some. Otherwise they tend to go before all the hosts can poll the server.

I do not use an RSS feed. Instead, I suggest you place any batch of new workunits on hold and let them out gradually so that most volunteers can receive it.

By the way, please update this project\'s website especially the message board. It needs a new look!

They already hold them back as Neasan said. Each host can only download 10 units a day and in my experience it takes a few polls of the server to reach the maximum number even if LHC@home\'s website has plenty of WU. This delay, in theory, allows for a greater opportunity for computers who are in a longer polling cycle to wake up and ask for work.
If you still aren\'t getting WU there are other things you can try such as lowering the value for how often BOINC connects to the internet or the size or you cache.

As for the forum, this is the updated version in all its glory.

Yes, things are already very limited for this reason. Each time your computer contacts the server you will get at most two work units. Then you have to wait at least 15 minutes before you can request two more. And as was mentioned earlier, each computer can only get 10 work units per core per day. This should do a fairly good job of spreading work out but at the end of the day, some people will get the short end of the stick.

We have just had 100,000 WUs dished out on a first 3 from 5 basis to get results back quicker and then the website was taken off-line. What is the sense in that?

If there is a 25% error rate then that means you need an IR of 4. Or it did when I was at school many moons ago. You can always issue an extra if one of the first 3 returns is an error in case number 4 is slow.

It might increase the return time slightly for individual WUs but it would mean more WUs could be started sooner so should result in a better overall rate of completion.

People, just a quick reminder. The goal here is to do science and help progress. Or at least it should be, IMHO. Not win a race of who gets the most numbers crunched.

If you want to face BOINC as a challenge, may I suggest climateprediction.net and it's 1400+ hours work units.

Whilst I agree that the science is the most important aspect, I do not understand your last point. The climateprediction models are amongst the least generous with credits and the science behind them is about the most accessible of all the BOINC projects.

I\'ve meant the difficulty to finish such a big work unit. 1400 hours are some 60 days of non stop working. It might be good to have some backup system on that. :)

For interest, do not select a GIMPS workunit of more than 100M digits. For a Core 2 CPU @ 2400 MHz working 24 hours/day on an exponent near 332,193,000 (100,000,058 decimal digits), the L-L time estimate is 5 years, 84 days. (Slacking-off to 23 hours/day would delay completion by another 83 days). All that for one workunit, without any room for a minor glitch or you start again!
