The bill to repair the LHC is likely to be higher than originally expected.

YAY WORK!
Can someone explain why I have on each machine, a bunch of WUs that finish properly, and a large amount that are tagged as redundant result, or cancelled by server. I did a search in the message boards, but got no results.
Is that because the search doesn\\\'t work either?

Does this have anything to do with the BOINC 6.x problem you are all talking about?

Thank you - Thank you
I feel for my slower machines, and hope that my fast ones get the faster ones have the luck of the draw to start crunching a WU first.

Message 20800 - Posted: 22 Nov 2008, 15:49:55 UTC - in response to Message 20722.

It\'s because of the screensaver graphics so we are working on rolling out a new version of SiXTrack sans graphics ASAP and eventually finding a replacement package.

I swear this project is going to be more professional very soon, Alex and I are trying to implement a system around BOINC regarding job submission, application updates, server upgrades, knowledge base etc etc that was not in place and so needs to be almost reverse engineered into place, this means it is quiet on the outside but moving along in the background similar to the server upgrade (another coming soon) and the deletion of as many duplicate hosts as we could do safely.

We have been reading the boards whenever we get 5 minutes but I have been uber-snowed under with work nonsense so have not been replying (sorry) but I can say that Alex has been out at CERN this week so hopefully more great news to follow if not look out for a murder in the east end of London next week although that wouldn\\\'t be very rare.

Thanks for sticking with us folks especially Dagorath who I have only contemplated killing on one or two occasions ;-)

BTW, are the single and double quotes in the forum posts and replies eventually going to be stripped of their preceding backslash(es) \', \", \\\', \\\", \\\\\\\', \\\\\\\", \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\', \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"?
It is somewhat annoying (very much so)

Has anyone at the LCH project looked at what happens when you shutdown and restart your computer as it relates to jobs failing. I see both LHC and Einstein jobs fail but SETI never fails on my machine. My system is not running 24x7 but is started two or three times a day and on occasion I will suspend the jobs when I need to do graphics rendering.

Just a thought.

BTW, I did NOT see any mention of this problem on the BOINC message boards.

@Neasan

While I fully understand your situation, I still think it is wrong that LHC is exploiting your/our work to good use but denies any form of crediting (must not necessarily be direct funding, although it'd seem appropriate after all these years).
But anyway, worst case let's call it dedication to the matter which many of us share and don't get rewards either. That's life.

Have you ever considered going the way of i.e. SETI or PrimeGrid (or associated BOINCstats service) and accept donations?
As I assume your yearly budget doesn't consume 476000 US$/year like SETI, this may provide a more realistic funding than keeping things run on a shoestring with all its side-effects...

(of course donations would come with expectations; I assume primarily to fix long-standing annoying bugs/website or server issues and alike; basically sending the projects through a body-shop to repair & shiny up the whole thing)

Is the new \\\"sixtrackbnl\\\" application meant to make possible running LHC on BOINC 6.2.x machines? If so, can I run work for this application yet? Will there be a main page announcement when one can turn on BOINC 6.2.x machines to this project?

Thanks!

So where are we on the process of validating the new application and retireing the old one ?

could someone summarise, in non-tecchie language, whether it is ok to upgrade to boinc 6.4.x now. I am still using 5.10.x and put off moving to v.6 on hearing of the problems. however my other projects, such as cpdn, have problems with the graphics screensaver if NOT using v.6 so I am getting restless without seeing clear guidance. Guess which projects have continuous work!! /pg
