Well, I just got the shared memory error also. Though I have had luck connecting earlier today ... Well, hopefully they will sort it out soon ... as long as the work keeps coming ... A shame I am down to only two Windows machines ... :( Ah well ... as long as it lasts I guess I will leave my share high and try to grab what work I can while the sun is shining ... |

I have been getting those on my dual processor P4 3.2 machine myself. I am down to my last 2 wu's and it won't let me get some more. Strange thing is it just let my old P4 2.5 get a bunch more work and it takes over twice as long to do them. Well, I just got the shared memory error also. Hi Paul, good to see that you are still among us. Welcome back! Michael Team Linux Users Everywhere |

Hi Paul, The jury is still out if I am back for any length of time. At the moment, it does not look good for that. The long debate is over at SAH in the politics section ... or find my profile and just read my postings ... The long and short of it is I see little improvement in the way things are done, the BOINC Manager is still too hard to use, the projects still don't use or get involved with the participant community, and ... Well, I said it all before over in the SAH forums ... Worse is the fact that I liked my G5 Mac so much I bought another Mac and am almost out of the PC business meaning that even if I were to stay around, it does not look good for doing LHC work even though the new computer uses Intel inside ... Mac Pro, 3.2 GHz, 8 core (dual quad Xeons), 16 G Ram, 2.38 TB RAID 5 array for main disk, 2 465G secondary disks, 5.46 TB TimeMachine drive (4 ea 1.5 TB Stripe Array)... oh, and 30" LCD display... |

... the BOINC Manager is still too hard to use Even 6.1? (Haven't tried it myself. Also, I don't have issues with the current version, but then I'm only running one PC...) ... the projects still don't use or get involved with the participant community... Amen! There are non-BOINC DC projects out there too of course; I don't run any myself (I can't be bothered to resolve any issues arising from interactions between them and BOINC), but some (e.g. F@H) seem to be well-run. |

There are non-BOINC DC projects out there too of course; I don't run any myself (I can't be bothered to resolve any issues arising from interactions between them and BOINC), but some (e.g. F@H) seem to be well-run. My look there did not show me that the atmosphere is that much more conducive. And I did try FAH once and was not impressed. Again, the fundamental problem, beat to death elsewhere, is that the projects, in essence, treat the community (for all the praise the heap on us in their advertising videos {here I am thinking specifically of the one done by an LHC guy at a conference and the RAH one on thier site}) we are treated as just worker bees, anonanymous, interchangeable, and ultimately, disposable... The evidence on my side supporting this argument is the extrodinary loss rate of new participants. I grant I am atypical with 4 computers, one of which is 8 core, but, if you look at the rise of my position in percentage terms (ABC, MC, and QMC most specifically), I just joined those projects days ago and NONE of them have gotten any significant or specific attention. Yet the last numbers I recall show me nearing the 50% mark on the newest and I have only done about 15 tasks ... maybe 20 by now ... yet I am the only one that seems to see significance here ... As far as the BONC Manager being too hard to use, I was not specifically refering to my ability... but in general ... for BOINC was intended to be aimed at the general population ... not just the geeks like me ... in that sense it has failed (IMHO) miserably ... |

There was a burst of activity across projects when some participants (e.g. Akos F, and Crunch3r) produced optimised apps for projects, but this definitely seems to have died down of late. extrodinary loss rate of new participants. I find it a little depressing that so much of BOINC's time is devoted to S@H myself. If you're looking for more personal involvement, perhaps projects such as Stardust@home and GalaxyZoo would be more to your taste? |

If you're looking for more personal involvement, perhaps projects such as Stardust@home and GalaxyZoo would be more to your taste? Sadly, I think that, at least as I understand it ... those would be precluded by my long list of disabilities and infirmaries of older age ... As far as the involvement in SAH part of that is historical in that they were the most successful of the early projects. And that "mass" of participants they had built up, for the most part, came along for the second generation. There were some noteable dropouts, people that did not want to move their large farms to the new thing ... or they were just tired of it all ... {edit} One other point is that most projects do little or nothing to make themselves 'attractive" to participants ... for some reason ... I can only guess that they are satisfied with the member base ... {/edit} |

Long time no see Paul. Just to let you know.......Galaxy Zoo is also a waste of time. I know because I was in the Top 5 of the "classifiers" there with close to 200,000 galaxies. The website is designed for kids and I guarantee if you even say one thing they disagree with you get banned from the Forum there by those clowns and they make sure they get your IP no matter how many times you try and get around that. I know the guy who designed the site and also Chris the guy who is running that silly project just to get himself some tv time over in GB. I have many, many emails saved from discussions back and forth with Chris and it gave me more than enough evidence. Not to mention they have nothing to do with taking the 10 million galaxy pictures and what is the purpose of having a few hundred thousand different people deciding if they are clockwise or counter clockwise spiral galaxies? I also found out some people go there just to mess up those worthless stats. If I could I would take back all the time I wasted since 200,000 even on a fast isp takes many, many hours and like I said......and should have decided from the beginning......it is a waste of time and has no scientific purpose. Grade school type of stuff. Volunteer Mad Scientist For Life |

Hmmm ... Well, *I* read an article that said that they actually did create a situation where the astronomers had to go back to their desks and rethink some things ... I am not sure what the right balance is between strictness and laxity on the forums. I know that there are some that never quite seem to quite "get it", but, for the most part *MY* feeling is that the forums are a wasteland now ... if there is one or two posts per day on most sites it is a wonder ... Anyway, my testing is going well ... I have an external 1.5 TB disk half way through a low level test with TechTool 4 and in another 3-4 days it should be done ... Memory is hanging in there ... I had a little load balancing problem with too many things on one UPS and not enough on the other ... of course, most of the external drives are off so, that gives me "room" ... so to speak on the two UPS ... A pretty hot day so I will let the room cool a bit more ,,, or heck, leave them off till tomorrow ... I probably should re-arrange the cords so I can turn off the small "bricks" too when I have the drives off ... Too many to plug and unplug ... Anyway ... all things considered, I am just here for a bit I think ... I don't know ... for all the work we do for the projects it sure does not seem like it is all that worthwhile ... |

Well, I just got the shared memory error also. I too have received the memory error. In my attempts to figure out what is happening, I first reset the project. That didn't help. Then I detached from the project and re-attached to it. Still no luck. I'm not receiving any work from the project either. I hope someone can figure out why this is happening and correct it. Luckily I'm attached to eighteen other projects, so my PC has plenty of work to do! Math69 |

It is an error on the server side ... not your system. We are kinda back to the problems they had last week ... :) |
