I have been running LHC for a while now but just lately the work units are making my computer freeze.

Has anyone else noticed this or anything similar?

I always have BOINC running at 100% even when i am working on the PC.

I have noticed that these new WU's make my PC hang for a few seconds sometimes.
Much worse, they occasionally make my hard drive go nuts; it grinds like it's going to shake itself off it's mounts -- YIKES!

Yes, I was running an 8hr on 13/3, and after about 3 hrs the PC froze on the

screen saver. It seemed to restart OK but froze again some hrs later.

Also the Graphics screen saver had stopped showing.

One of my machines doesn't have a graphics acceleration card; it's been having trouble with the screen saver as well. Seems that these new WU's are so demanding on CPU resources, even the motherboard-integrated graphics can't handle the additional demands of the screen saver. My other two machines have nice graphics cards (ATI Radeon 256K and NVIDIA 8600M 512K) and they run the screen saver just fine.

Whooo.. this new wave of WU's is crazy fun though!

I have had this occur as well on a stock Dell E510. I found that when running 1 cpu only or having the 2 cpus work on different projects, it does not freeze up. Only when both cpus are running LHC does it happen.
I usually notice these messages:

3/13/2008 9:26:16 AM|lhcathome|If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

Yes, i found exactly the same thing Mike. If there is just one LHC work unit running, everything is fine. I have 2 CPU's and it happens when 2 LHC work units run at the same time.

My PC is Intel(R) Core(TM)2 CPU 6400 @ 2.13GHz with and ATI graphics card. But i don't run the screen saver.

This problem is so bad i have to suspend LHC so i can use the computer. I had to suspend LHC so i could write this message, its that bad.

I've also had troubles running LHC work very recently.
Not only when the screensaver is running.
It seems to bog down my machines (all are old and crappy) during specific times of calculation; possibly close to the beginning or end of the wu.
On one very old machine I'm seeing blue screen of death with "Can't write to hard drive" errors only while running LHC work.

I'm Crunching for Malariacontrol at my spare time, there is a similar problem, the so called Optimizeer tasks send my Computer hanging for few seconds, there it is somehow related to my OS (win2k), though most people state its caused by an outdated java version, which is not the case on my machine...
plus LHC@home on the other machine running winxp has no such problems...

I have the same problem. This happens on Pentium D 930 when two LHC tasks are running at same time but not always. The situation usually gets cleared if I suspend Boinc for a while and then let it continue. Although it can happen again after a while if two LHC tasks are active. Haven't seen it happen on any hyper threaded machines though or on a machine with two physical CPUs.

Count me in as well. It's a single processor machine and it doesn't exactly freeze solid, I don't have to reboot or anything, but it slows it down enormously. It effectively freezes for 15 to 30 seconds at a time.

I may be off base here but I seem to remember this symptom several years ago with LHC. Anybody else recall that?

Which version of Boinc Manager are you having this trouble on? Boinc version 5.10.45 has been causing some problems with me but it not specific to LHC.

Masud.

Have same problem here. One CPU (single core), and other (two cores), freezes for few seconds when all cores crunch LHC. But this problem i have noticed 3 weeks ago, from this time i suspended LHC, as i wasn't able to work normally on those computers. I use 5.10.45 bBOINC manager, but this problem exist only on LHC project.

I just looked again at the Problem with Malariacontrol, there seems to be a bug in the BOINC-Client...

We have made a change to our app to work around a bug in the boinc client (the boinc client becomes unresponsive (to the application) while doing dns lookups, which caused the wrapper to exit repeatedly on some machines (saying "lost heartbeat from core client - exiting")

note:
its not sure this is related to freezing MC-Units nor to to freezing LHC@home-WUs...
