I've seen messages in forums and in the boinc manager that seems to answer some of the questions but I'm not sure I understand the reasoning.

So when a project like lhc ports to a new platform - say linux 64bit, the proper boinc manager has to be installed. When it comes to the project and individual client (end user machine), is there an application module that's downloaded with the data download? I've occasionally seen boinc project messages stating "no work for this platform". Does that mean there's work for other platforms vs. the project just stating there's no work period?

Taking the last questions farther, I looked at www.dotsch.de and their list of HP-UX platform binaries. I maybe getting access to a 2 PA-RISC proc K class machine running 11.0 and was wondering if it was worth pursuing (Is there work for it?).

Thanks,
William

The various platforms do not work the same way so different executables are required for each one. The executables generally are downloaded from the projects. In some cases you can compile your own application, but there are only a few projects that allow this.

When you seen "no work for this platform" it normally means that there is work for other platforms.

You need the BOINC client and the science application seperatly. The science application do the real computing of the different project and the BOINC client only the download/upload and scheduling between different projects.

Each BOINC project is resposible for it's own science applications. So the projects supports different platforms.

HP-UX 11.0 would be supported by the SETI and SIMAP project. Both projects requires a manual installation of the science application binaries.
I think both projects are OK for a K-Class. SETI has long WUs with a very moderate deadline, so it should be no problem for a K-Class. The SIMAP WUs are short with a one week deadline. - Should be not the problem for the K-Class.
Which CPUs have the K-Class installed ?

Thanks for the confirmation. I'm hoping to get my hands on it in about 8 weeks (we're migrating over to an N-class but I'm not allowed to boinc test it).

The K-class has 2 PARISC 180s and it's running 11.00 which according to dotsch.de (which I'm assuming is your site) has the binaries for the boinc 5.4.11 client to run. Is 5.4.11 still a viable release? Do you know if the source is available and runable for 5.10.20 on 11.00?

Thanks,
William

5.4.11 should be OK. I had a lot of problem by compiling the newer 5.8 and 5.10 sources at 11.0. There was some features needed, which 11.0 did not have. But I am still try to get it running...

The source of the BOINC client is free available. But in my opinion, a upgrade of your system to 11i - if your HW would be supported with 11i - would be better than invensting a lot of time in compiling a new BOINC client on 11.0.

I talked to my boss and he/we're intending to install 11i on the k-class once the n-class is in full production.

Thanks for the insight and I'll probably be asking a lot off hp-ux / boinc specific questions in a couple/several months.

Is there a specific project forum I should post those questions to (ie. seti or simap)?

Thanks,
William

Have a lot of fun with your the N-Class and 11i - The N-Class it's a great system.
HP-UX 11i is a very good step forward. There are a lot of good new features, better perfomance, more stable...

There are forums at the SETI and SIMAP homepage. You can also mail it me directly or contact me via the BOINC helpdesk.
