I now know what type of user you are and I really didn't want to believe there would be people like that on LHC@home but there are. Hey, I'm not a "hacker" with bad intentions. If I was, I could have done much worse things than just a forum post from your account. When I found the bug, I reported i privately, and helped fix it (and we found other bugs during the tests). Then I privately contacted some project admins telling them to upgrade. I could have gone around all existing projects stealing account keys instead; but I didn't. I did it with your account now just to show what kind of holes are hidden in the ancient server. I'll stay away from LHC now. But I think there are a few options: 1) You upgrade the server. 2) You fix or workaround the security bugs, as a temporary solution (you may contact me so I tell you the ones I know). 3) You wait for more hacks to happen (not by me; I won't do anything else). Somebody just told me "I think I could update all LHC users' resource share to 0, I'd just have to dig out old code". 4) You shut the project down until either 1) or 2) is done to avoid 3). Just my opinion. |

My opinion is, given your apparent connections to various BOINC resources, you could've conducted this discussion via mailing lists or by having Rom or David contact Neasan directly through email and/or phone to discuss the server upgrade. They could convey the urgency, if any, to Neasan directly and would be an "official" source. I think these guys are doing infinitely better than what had happened with the prior administration, but...oh well, tis just my opinion... |

Seems to me everyone should "stand back" and let Alex and Neason do their job without interference, and while constructive criticism is helpful it seems that all this arguing is counterproductive. considering what they inherited I think they're doing a great job and yes the server needs to be updated. NOW I'm sure their painfully aware of that. I guess it comes down to this, who's gonna be part of the problem and who's gonna be part of the solution? if their not getting it done as fast as you think they should then give them a hand instead of creating more headaches for them. Just my two cents A clear conscience is usually the sign of a bad memory |

You and others have expressed valid concerns, but I think that you should ease up a bit on the direct insults, but that's just my opinion. |

Edit: Decided to remove reply... While the thread title certainly still applies to the goings-on now, all the noise is amounting to a thread hijack, which is why I decided to just remove what I had posted in response... |

Maybe a little taste of their own medicine will get us, the people who donate the CPU time that makes this project work, the respect we deserve. Respect is earned, and not always deserved. This is not a poke at you, but a comment on this process. You can have the well intentioned desire to improve this project, but ultimately this does fall into the hands of those runing the project. I am sure that they would love to upgrade the server systems to the latest and greatest, but may have other internal politics to deal with that cannot be discussed in this open forum. And to quote a cliche "all good things take time". "Patience is a virtue". |

I said that I agreed with you in part about the IR issue and that a good middle ground was to do the project-side aborts.
The quote below, is exactly what you stated back in the "Because you asked" thread...

'bout time I test something here. EDIT: yup, as I expected, the security hole I used on previous posts in this thread to get into Neasan's account is still open. Have a nice day. Keep your passwords safe! :) |
