Today, I saw a strange screen saver running, not the usual I've become used to. I saw that it was LHC, for the first time on my machine. Cool graphics!

I'm glad to be able to help out, as I'm very curious about the cutting-edge physics. Also, it's an immediate problem, not some theoretical stuff. So I've upped my share on BOINC to give LHC priority, when it has work to do.

Good luck everyone.

Also glad to help this big science work but I'm quite astonished that this sixtracks simulation ends so quickly ...

Just an idea: You (CERN and int. community) are working to setup a computing grid (UK + IN2P3+ CERN + ...) to crunch the future upcoming TBytes of data in order to reconstruct backward the original event from recorded data (quarks original interaction based on sub particles observations). That's fully understood since the expected data rate is tremendous. There is also a filtering approach in order to pre-select the most promising events. So such events will be back analyzed by super computers and that's nice for me. However, may be the BOINC community of volunteers in science may help on "less promising data". Today, personal computers easily store GB of data and have some "computing" power. So why no not?

I took this idea from "climatprediction.net" which send heavy works (~ 6 months computation) but has a dedicated community.

By the way, good luck with LHC calibration and tuning

There are two issues with this sadly:
1) Porting the Grid software is a nightmare, we are looking at a few things which could be ported but a lot of it is very complex for BOINC(CPDN is long not necessarily complex)
2)As with LEP before the "less promising" events will be binned, the LHC will keep 15PB a year at current estimates and that is only about 1% of the actual generated signals. The Grid is being used to simulate what we hope to see so we keep the 1% need(1% is about the percentage of signals expected to be useful)

Hi Neasan

Thanks for this answer. I think I heavily underestimated the size of forthcoming tasks

Regards and good luck with this challenge
