Originally there was no mac client because the compiler that they used to make the client did not have a mac version. If there is one now, it would likely only be for the newer intel macs. Pretty sure PPC will never be supported on LHC - at least for the sixtrack application that we are currently running. Maybe they will make a mac version of the new Garfield client though...

Ah, I could've sworn there was a PPC app, but I guess not! Thanks for the heads-up. :)

No guarantees as we need to double check with the scientists but Garfield will probably run both PPC and Intel and we are talking to some people about SixTrack on Macs and would like it to be both PPC and Intel. I'm a Mac user so would like to crunch more than I do with just my work desktop.

With the new Mac OS out today(?) I think many people are gonna get new Macs. It might be good for the project to have the ability for Macs to Munch some numbers also.

This "problem" will not be fixed over night the actual compiler SixTrack uses is not compatible with Macs, we have talked to Apple to see what can be done but don't hold your breath.

Leopard is out today but I really can't see it being a big deal outside the Mac fanboy herds, I don't think it will drive sales.

You might be right about that, but I know a number of people who are getting interested in Mac's. I just got one so go figure...and a free OS X tee shirt too!

I have 5 slots open on three Intel Mac Minis ready to go!

Now that there is more work, I hope efforts to support SixTrack on Intel Macs will be redoubled. My little iFleet awaits!!

I'm not saying it's not exciting (I'm just too cheap to upgrade) but I don't think outside the geek world most people are aware it's even happening and it may drive some sales from that quarter but those people are half likely to be running BOINC anyway and probably know that we (sadly) can't run on Macs.

With Crossover (comercial version of wine) you can install a Windows BOINC client and crunching LHC. But the problem is that sometimes the CPU time would reported to 0 seconds and the GUI RPC Port for managing the BOINC client with the manager is not abjustable in the BOINC manager, so you can only manage the client with the boinccmd tool.
I have not tried if the newer version of wine work successfull, too. After a year a go I have setup it, I did not get it working successfull with wine.

I think anyone at an Apple store on launch night/evening got one, I was kinda tempted but it was Friday night and I had a gig to go to.

Well that depends ... the first 500 people per store got one. Even if they didn't buy anything. I had been looking at getting a mac for some time now, but was waiting for the new OS to come out first. So with the free t-shirt offer I decided to get one on launch day. I got the smallest mac book pro. I'm quite happy with it. I have a number of very old macs (68000 mPU) from a time when macs were MORE popular then PC's.

....and a free OS X tee shirt too!

I tried to get a t-shirt at the last store opening, but I was too late. Sooo....

eBay to the rescue! . . . . . $8 and it's the real thing. God, I need to get a life.

(Maybe the LHC will create a black hole and devour the Earth; then everything will finally make sense.)

Well I do LOVE my Mac....well maybejust maybe love is to strong a work. But it is crunching about as much as my other 4 computers are right now, or maybe even more so. Umm. Munch Munch Munch. But it does not run LHC. Well that kinda makes up for LHC being given 10:1 priority over everything else.

I have a G5 PPC 2.3GHz, and I would love for it to crunch for LHC. I know the return on investment is not nearly as high as a x86 or x64 client (or, apparently, a PlayStation 3 client or graphics card GPU client), but Mac users tend to be loyal. Also, the PPC runs at a lower temperature, so for those of us in warmer climates, it is easier to leave a PPC Mac running at all times. (My Mac has averaged a down time of less than one month a year.)

There is a fairly lage number of BOINCers that have macs and are always looking for projects that support the mac. You might be surprised at the additional crunch power added if/when you add mac support ...

I've written a Howto for installing and configuring the Windows BOINC client with LHC@home on Intel based Macs. It's available at www.dotsch.de/boinc under the BOINC Howtos section.
