We will look into trying to sort it so maybe it's a one job in, one job out situation i.e. as long as you are grinding through the jobs you can get another as soon as you send back the last.

One in, one out, would seem to be the way to go except for dial up folk,( I'm on 24-7 so it doesn't apply) don't know how u'r make everyone happy! unless you set up a 1 Day cache for everyone, depending on what their box's can kick out per client. Just gotta do whats best for the project in the long run!

This must be the highest number of wu's sent out for over a year.

This is half the reason that the press release was done. It can be tricky for even the scientists to guess in advance how many jobs they will produce so when they told us (quite recently too) that there would be this many we went in to a bit of a scramble to get a release written and have a long discussion about quotas with them and Alex and I tried to clean up a few things like the 64Bit issues (I know we need to add Linux), avatars, wu/results to be deleted (you'll notice they've been purged from the Server Status page), etc

I won't give a timetable but the code upgrade is next. Once this all settles down and we can get a proper run at it. As many have noted the code is ancient and that makes any upgrade even trickier(I imagine my eyes will bleed at least once) but it will happen (and it will not affect operation of the service) and from then on we hope to be practically bleeding edge with the server code. I'll even be trying to do some patches to get the HTML for BOINC projects standards compliant and maybe trying to make the CSS easier for people to play with it so every BOINC site doesn't look identical except the colour scheme.

Two workunits a day, one request an hour.

So, the quota applies to CPU while the request time applies to user.
Just fate that first box received a WU before the second box asked. The second box was told NO. Then the first box requested and received work after the hour delay, but before the second box could try again.
First box happy. Second box pouting and waiting.

No, request time applies to individual machines too.

One problem I see is that the server requests a 1-hour delay and the client isn't following it. I'm not sure if doing another request before the hour makes the last-request-timer on the server "reset" (which would make you NEVER get work if you request every 30 minutes). It certainly shouldn't.

Hungry CPUs seem to ask often, and it looks like they set their own wait time - at least my problem box wasn't deferring the required hour.
I suspended network activity on the problem machine, waited about 90 minutes, then turned network activity back on. It picked up its first WU and deferred the next request for 1 hour.
Perhaps the 1 hour deferral isn't sent/processed unless work is assigned.

BTW - It seems the quota may actually be set at 4 WUs. The machine that first started getting work received 4 before the server message said quota reached on the request for number 5. Results for computer

in my opinion it must be controlled over the daily quota, thats the way to satisfy even users with dial up
one important thing i want to promote is: the quota should take into account the number of cores of a CPU, say a single gets X WU´s, so a dual core should get 2X WU´s and a quad core 4X WU´s

i hope neasan consider this, cause i want my Q6600 be under heavy duty
adjusting X would be difficult, too

It's set to two WUs per CPU. That computer is dualcore, so 4 for it.

Think you'll find if you look under your computer info where the daily quota is shown that it is in fact

Quote "Maximum daily WU quota per CPU = 2/day"

For CPU read 'Cores' thats certainly how it worked on my machines i.e. my dual core has done 4 wu's today and the single core has only done 2.

Does this mean I will finally be able to delete my 3 year old computers from my LHC account?! :)

Thanks for setting me straight. I can't believe I missed that minor detail. I'll just blame it on sleep deprivation.
I worked 12 hours last night, and came home to babysit an ill granddaughter. She can't go to school sick, so she gets to stay with Grandpa until her parents get home from their jobs. Three hours and counting. ;-)

Hi, As I just explained in another thread we have throttled the settings back for a few days to coincide with a press release so that the jobs get shared around a bit... especially if we get some new users.

Normal service to return next week.

Alex

Sounds good Alex,

No problem with new members joining but I am one of the basic 12 members that have been logged on the site 24/7 for several years now even when there was many months of nothing just to stay in touch here.

It is just hard to look at the mountain of wu's and not get to at least have em as fast as I can finish them.

That's all I ever wanted to do here.

Can't believe I haven't hit the 100,000 mark after all these years.

I think once we come back to normal I will fire up my amd 3200 again to go with these other ones.

You can tell by my stats that I am pretty much only interested in particle physics and cosmology.

Once the new users are happy (not finding an inactive project), AND the server is upgraded, they can start using fair and non-time-wasting work distribution settings. For now, it's better that everybody can get some (although in my opinion 2 a day is way too low, but well).
