This project RARELY has work.

Lately the rate has been about once a month with small enough batches that not all hosts will be able to get work in each batch.

I now count 9 threads asking about lack of work on the first page of this board alone and there are bound to be numerous other threads on the other boards.

From the Forum rules page:
Before you start a new thread please look through the forum and see if your question has already been answered. There is a search function at the top of the page with the forums on, please use it.

Work is very intermittent here, with perhaps one day's work every two months. Leave your machine attached and it just might get some work when it is available, but don't expect a regular supply so have it attached to at least one other project so it isn't sitting idle when there is no work here, which is most of the time.

Thanks Ray

Firstly, the other threads are so old, it seems difficult to believe that nothing has changed.

Secondly, I get snippets from comments on various posts on some of the boards about constant, large amounts of work to crunch being made available in 2008. Is this indeed true?

Finally, I cannot accept that a project with such a high profile has so little work for the BOINC community on a consistent basis. I gave up on it two years ago and have returned to find that nothing much has changed, yet the LHC itself is mentioned in various popular science sources.

Some sort of "sticky" news item in the home page of this site about the plans and expected timeline would be appreciated.

The graphs on Scarecrow's page show that little has been little regular work here for quite some time. There are short-duration spikes in work available, but nothing regular and I suspect that some of this was just to test that the migration to London had gone smoothly. I wouldn't expect any imminent improvement on that, as my understanding (and I could be wrong here so don't take this as gospel) is that all we were ever meant to be doing here was simulating the beam and hence calibrating the magnets. With those magnets now being physically in place, the simulating must surely come to an end soon and the actual science begins. So the project's original job is nearly done.

As to work next year - that depends on whether they can port the Garfield application, or its successor, over to Boinc to continue to make use of us willing crunchers after the Big Switch On. Certainly the 12th October news item was very positive about future work but the lack of regular work now may already have disillusioned some of the new crunchers who signed up after that launch but are still waiting for their first wu.

That being 2 months ago, I agree that it's maybe time for an official update from Neasan on the front page on what's happening, what's likely to happen, say, next month, and the longer term. Boincers are a fickle bunch and are easily turned away if they don't see any regular progress. Even if it's just to tell us "It's broken again and nothing will happen until March." (NanoHive had no work for a long time and then the head guy posted a message that there would be no chance of any work until April.) At least then we know what's going on, even if it's nothing.

Happy Winter Festival to all.
