hey all,

From all projects that I'm crunching, I think the LHC screensaver is by far the nicest. Is there an option to use it as a normal screensaver? I know it will be in a modified version, since it is in some way linked to the data being crunched. I'm just wondering if such a version exists.

There are various ways to "trick out" the LHC screen saver so that it runs without an active WU, but they vary widely in terms of platforms and consistency. I used to have a somewhat-reliable method I was using on Win XP, but it was a pain in the butt to get it working. I've since forgotten what the trick was.

So the easy answer to your question is that there is no easy answer.

Too long have I waited to see the glorious screensaver then this morning whilst cleaning my room, it popped up.

I've stopped cleaning just to watch it. My estimated crunch time is 4 hours so I should start cleaning again then :D

Didnt know there's a screensaver until I read this thread...

Awesome! I have to agree: The by far best, nicest screensaver of all BOINC Projects!

I also love this screen saver. If there was a way to make LHC always run on 1/2 my dual core and show only that screen saver I would. But we have to wait for CERN to go operational before I can even think about making my dream work. *sniff*

I can't activate my screen saver, the select button remains grayed out when a workunit is running.. is there something I'm missing? I'd love to see it!

How is BOINC installed? As a service you won't be able to see graphics.

The work-around is here.

Thanks for the link!

Unfortunately, I'm running a standard XP program install rather than a service so this particular fix isn't it (if anything, as per the workaround, boinc isn't listed in services.msc).. and I take it that there are no additional downloads or anything else simple to do. Hmm. This is an excellent wiki, though, I'll spend a night or two deep within and see what I find.

I'm not in Windows right now, but make sure that there is boinc.scr. It should be in C:\\Windows (at least searching my Windows partition from Linux shows it there). I'm not sure why the show graphics button would be grayed out in the manager. Is that the case for other projects with graphics (Einstein or Rosetta, for example).

You can always try upgrading to the latest stable (5.10.13) or doing a repair install of your current version.

Sorry I can't be of more help. I basically stink at troubleshooting graphics and network issues.

I did a bit of digging, Boinc Wiki's development roadmap entry for milestone 6.0 points to the situation...

lhc@home is the only one of my projects that uses an .scr file for the screensaver, all the other projects embed the screensaver within the application code. Hence, no active 'show graphics' button.. I'll have to manually fire up the screensaver via desktop properties.

Thanks again for your help.. Turned out to be pretty simple (of course). I can't wait for the next work units!
