I first also thought it's a problem with the CPU ID. Until I merged successful with SETI and ufluids. Ok, maybe it's depending to the server - Version? No idea how to find out which Version is in use by the projects.

@Professor Desty Nova: As you can see, there are a few month between the last contact and now. Had have a harddrive crash, so since I did not have the old files, I downloaded and installed the latest version. Which it had been on the old disk, I don't remember.

Since the people at SETI@Home are the main developers of BOINC, normaly they have the latest server code running. Here at LHC@Home, we have version 505 (you can see the server version of a project in the messages tab of BOINC;
30/06/2007 05:28:11|lhcathome|Scheduler RPC succeeded [server version 505]). I recently saw that they made some new changes in the merger code of the server to facilitate it. So only when Alex and Neasan update the server code will you probably be able to merge. Or if they clean the database of old results you can delete it (I still have results of 2005!!!).

I finaly collected the server versions from all my projects:
SETI: 509
Einstein: 509
ufluids: 510
LHC: 505

So it is possibly still that it is about the server version, but maybe also about some of the options settings or some extra stuff?!? As you see, SETI and Einstein have the same Version. At SETI I had been successful, but not at Einstein. So I will wait for an Update of the Server code at the projects.

Unfortunately the server software doesn't really have version numbers, the number posted is an approximation and is missing the last number. SETI is running a more recent version than Einstein. A new version installed today will probably show 511.

Is there a fix for this yet? I have one host that has been duplicated at least 5-8 times a day for 7 months. Needless to say I have tryied to merge them all and after 30 minutes my eyes start to cross. I have been doing it every few days but the list seems to never end. I have gotten all the ones that have credit together but now I would just like to DELETE the hosts.

I was really, really, *really* hoping that along with the move, we would get updated BOINC server software. The latest version has *much* better merging functionality.

I manage my machines remotely. I use sites like BOINCstats to monitor my machines, to see if they are behaving normally, or if there are problems. Having 3 entries for a machine, multiplied by 50 projects makes it just about impossible.

I agree ... very time consuming on remotely managed computers. I've all but given up running LHC on those, just work with the ones I can touch every day. I'll just be patient - had some luck merging earlier this year, so I'll wait a little longer. I think most folks are doing the same ...

I also do the same but now can differentiate between the wheat and the chaff. Thanks,

If at least the Validator and Deleter would work up all the old Results, one could at least delete old Hosts.

Best Idea (currently) would be to go back to a more relaxed set of Merging Requirements.

...basically like in the old days of BOINC, upto and including allowing Users to Merge any Hosts they wish - since that was abused to create single "Uber"-Hosts with hilarious RAC, it shifted to more and more restrictive Merging policies.
Either that or something inbetween. Right now it's just painful with little means of fixing it on the User's side (short of manually manipulating Client xml files and alike).

The latest version of that functionality works very well, allowing "similar" machines to be merged. The project just needs to upgrade.

Hey, nice. They bother to update the BOINC logo but not to upgrade the server code...

Maybe it's time to try one of the many dozen security bugs that BOINC has already fixed in the past years.

I just figured out what the problem is. When we click on merge this computer and it brings up the long list of computers. Then we click on 'select all' then click 'Merge Hosts' we get the blank page right? Well, what is happening by clicking on 'Merge Hosts' is a long line of code that looks like this (shorten for demo):
http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/host_edit_action.php?id_0=7991848&id_1=7828682&id_2=7828716&id_3=7828753&id_4=7828782&id_5=7828807&id_6=7828848&id_7=7828945&id_ and so on and so on . . . .

The address bar only allows so many characters of text in it. So if you were to go ahead and click 'select all' then 'Merge Hosts' get the blank screen then delete the last bit of code at the end of the address bar and add "nhost=500" it will work. Just try it with a few host to merge and look at the address bar on the page that shows the merged hosts and you will see the format of the link. Using the example above it would look like this:
Bad code shorten for demo
http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/host_edit_action.php?id_0=7991848&id_1=7828682&id_2=7828716&id_3=7828753&id_4
Good code shorten for demo
http://lhcathome.cern.ch/lhcathome/host_edit_action.php?id_0=7991848&id_1=7828682&id_2=7828716&id_3=7828753&nhost=500

Alex or Neasan could a limit be put in of how many hosts can be displayed? It seems the magic number is around 130. So when a user clicks on a host and clicks 'merge this computer' the list of comparable hosts is limited to say, 100. That way when the user clicks 'Select all', then 'Merge Hosts' the code actually works.

Good luck and looking forward to the future. :)

Good code: use POST instead of GET. I think this has also been fixed months ago. Admins: Are you going to upgrade the server code some time in this century?

I've been merging my thousands of host for months. I've found you have to merge around 100 at at time.

Now I have duplicate host that I connot merge. Some are from before and some are the new ones.

Will someone from LHC merge the rest of the like hostnames for me? I normally wouldn't worry about it but it has so many host listed in the BOINCStats that I can't keep up with them.

Thanks

Bill
