I think that BOINC should be integrated into Windows so that it would run always and in many computers in the world. There are only about one milloin BOINC users. Imagine how many computers and how many Windowses there are. Imagine how many dual-core/quad-core computers sitting idle.

Windows setup could ask e-mail address and use that when attaching to a BOINC project. The user wouldn't have to do anything... Of course, there should be an option to disable the BOINC.

Is this a useful idea?

EDIT: I have a bad feeling that Microsoft wouldn't support this idea...

I wouldn't support this idea. While I do want more participants running BOINC based projects this sounds to much like the behavior of a virus.

I disagree keck, as Vista is rolled out and faster processors become available, PC's CAN cope with number crunching in the name of science.

This newer faster technology means todays home computer is quite capable (without freezing up).

I don't see any reason why Microsoft shouldn't support such a "service". (With the option to enable or disable)

In fact, every educational establishment in the world should support the cause.

It's easy to implement, and I think, what with such establishments being funded by government anyway, 'governments' in the name of 'science' would discover what they are 'looking for' sooner rather than later.

Forgive the wording, I aint as clever as you guys, but I think you catch my drift.

It will only give the Linux Zealots another reason to blast Microsoft for adding "bloatware", even if it is disabled by default...

Also I think they may actually want to get Vista to work first, no?

Although processors/hard drives/everything are improving year on year the problem is that as they increase so does demand, files get larger, programs get more resource hungry.

Now if BOINC was a proprietary format which would allow Microsoft to corner the market and spy on users then expect to see it in the first Vista service pack otherwise we'll just have to try and keep promoting BOINC to the public so they may install it themselves.
