It might seem an easy question, but if the project does not come up soon, I do not see what we will be calculating anymore, since the LHC is due to be switched on in 2007. Which brings me to the following questions:

1) Do we already know how to stabilise the beam with the tube?
2) Will the new wus be about something else than the initial setup of the magnets?
3) What about the promissed Garfield wus?

Info from the LHC Page:

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a particle accelerator which is being built at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, the world's largest particle physics laboratory. When it will switch on in 2007, it will be the most powerful instrument ever built to investigate on particles proprieties.

As of autumn 2006, there are plans to distribute a second software package, Garfield, which does simulations of gases in high fields, to simulate the behaviour of particle detectors used at the LHC.

This thread is worth a quick bump. B-Roy is asking some good questions! Anyone have the answers?

1) The LHC isn't actually finished construction wise. If anyone saw the BBC a few weeks ago there was a lot of coverage on the lowering of CMS into the pit. This being the case there is still a lot of work needing to be done by LHC@home in that respect so don't worry.

2) After the turn on sixtrack will probably be on the go still but we are looking into gettin actual LHC data run on LHC@home but that will involve some work in porting software.

3) Garfield is up in the air and I don't know too much about it but don't worry we are looking at getting other projects onto LHC@home.

"Don't worry" usually means you should worry, or at least not get your hopes too high.

We don't take kindly to any o' dem "high hopes" here at LHC (spoken with Mountain Folk/inbred/hick accent) ...ya want high hopes? Go crunch fur one uh doze fancy pro-teeen foldin' projects.

There's work when there's work, ya hear? Dern whippersnappers.

Don't like my "negatives vibes"? Ariel, with this project if you don't have hope you don't have anything. Your RAC of (currently) 10 and mine of zero supports that. And how do you deduce that hill-folk speak that way?

IMHO the scientists get results from our work, work with them and if necessary give new WUs to get further results they need. No work for us does not mean no progress. Or do you think WU results are all what counts?

Yeeesh! Beverley Hillbillys proves that.

Yeeesh! You learn about the world from TeleVision? or Hollywood? That speaks volumes.

What I think is that my comment was meant humorously, tongue-in-cheek. Don't take it serious, though it does have some basis in fact in the real world.

Well, for me, I'm hill-folk, and I speak that way. Not really.

Yikes! (seems to fit the mood of this thread) and Happy Easter.

Yo, Mr. "Nothing But Idle Time" - *aarg* - I did take your post as being humorously light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek, nose-in-pants, etc. I was just playing off of you, man! Relax. Take a chill pill; I prefer Xanax myself... it really takes the edge off, and the stuff makes you feel goooooood. My reply to your post was a funky, awkward, off-beat, weirded-out, positive vibe to you and all the LHC folk. Speaking of "folk" I don't really know much about hill-folk at all... but I did see Deliverance.

Peace.

...err, I bet this crowd could post an entire thread employing this kind of comedy. I shudder to think where it would end though. --NBIT

With no work to crunch, we get bored. If you're offended by the "hill-folk" jokes, just post some comedy of your own... I'd appreciate some fresh material; tell us what you think is funny, NBIT.

Later - - ;)

A small attempt to fill this desperate vacuum:

What do we crunch for?
Nobody knows anymore.
Many years in the past,
we knew how to crunch fast.

But now we all feel forgotten,
Knowing not whether it's for ever,
Our computers and minds rotten.
We are awaiting some hero clever,
Who will solve our trouble,
Before it gets double.
Helas, it's tough to meet them often.

Maybe somebody soon will try.
Hope should be the last to die!
