Gentlemen: After a number of near-misses at obtaining a WU, I can only conclude that those whose computers are always on-line will always co-opt those of us who are in a dial-up configuration (for other valid reasons, eg, children in college). Would it be possible for the good administrators at LHC to keep a few WU's in abeyance, as a good-will gesture? I am aware that the flood-gates will open, when the project becomes 100% operational; however, for old-time's sake . . . Thanks/danke schon (sans umlaut), Jim M. |

Gentlemen: After a number of near-misses at obtaining a WU, I can only conclude that those whose computers are always on-line will always co-opt those No. Dial up users should use another project if they can't seem to sign on when the project has work. We're not going to hold back science progressing on the Collider just because we want to secure some work for the one or two dial up people who can't seem to figure out how to get out of the stone age. |

[...]keep a few WU's in abeyance, as a good-will gesture? [...] for old-time's sake.No. Whoa, that's harsh! . . . Incidentally, I'm a "mostly always on" dial-up user (which is odd, I know.) I DID get a few WUs of the last batch. Hooray for me. For those dial-up users who also use their phone line for voice (imagine that!) They will simply have to wait for the project to reach %100 capacity --- also, if they check the message boards frequently, Neasan will sometimes give notice of work that will soon be made available; they can make sure to be online when the trickle-gate opens. _______ "Three quarks for Muster Mark!" . . . . . . . - James Joyce, Finnegans Wake . . . . |

%100? Hmmm, I should make sure I'm 100% sober next time I post - heh heh. |

I think it would be a mistake to make special traetment for dial up users. There are times when work remains available for 4hrs or more here, and then dial up users should be able to get some. In addition, almost any of the suggestions in the 'fairer distribution' thread would benefit dial up users but without making them a special case. That I would be in favour of doing, as I say in that thread - more than once I say it ;-)
Sorry Aaron, I am not with you on this. There are people who can't get broadband for many good reasons. Did you know that if you live close to a poser station in the UK, you can't get broadband, for just one example? The ordinary phone service has to go down a fibre optic link for safety reasons, and the fibres pass ISDN phone and data (which is used to provide analogue phone service), but not ASDL / SDSL analogue-digital signals. Poser station? Should that be power station or is poser station a name for something else. |

Poser station? Should that be power station or is poser station a name for something else. yep, power station :-( Tho come to think of it, I know some folk who might benefit from being directed to a poser station... R~~ |

Gentlemen: I thank you for your comments/suggestion, in response to my message #16396. Not wanting to hinder good science at LHC, but not desiring to discontinue participation in the very worth-while project, I shall continue accepting such WU's as become available. One word, If I may: "Good science" is for everyone, and not an elite few. One has only to harken to the late Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" account of what happened to the library (and librarian) at Alexandria, to know what can happen (worst-case, certainly) to the best literary intentions, when the average person is not actively brought into the process. And, the "average person", today, as ever, is the tax-payer who funds such projects. More, not fewer, computer users -- with their computers, such as they are -- should be encouraged to participate. I look forward to continued participation with one and all, in LHC@Home. Sincerely, Jim Martin |

One word, If I may: "Good science" is for everyone, and not an elite few. Hear hear! (some say Here here!) - - - The more people who are "allowed" to participate in science, the stronger our species becomes. The ivory towers have, and still are a great asset to us; but this is a new era. The "scientific community" has expanded 100 fold in the last half-century. The routine fortification of those proverbial ivory towers must end. Let them stand as-is and be proud; they need only fear worthy competition. We, on the other hand, are the neo-peasants of science. Let us join in the glory of knowledge (We will do our best not to get in the way.) _______ "Three quarks for Muster Mark!" . . . . . . . - James Joyce, Finnegans Wake . . . . |

I'm one such user who can't get broadband. It's not that I am unwilling or unable to pay for such service; I CANNOT get broadband due to my very rural location. I've been in many word-wars with my local telephone company as well as the cable provider over the last five years and they simply "apologize for the inconvenience" and say it isn't available and will not be available for the foreseeable future. So, like many others who don't have broadband, for us it is dialup or nothing. I have gotten a few WU's since I joined LHC so to all other dilaupers: Don't dispair. Be tenacious and you'll get something eventually. Best to all. Tom in Florida |

To be honest we are looking into the issue of a minority of users sucking up every available work unit but not sure about dial-up users. Also Aaron, that was harsh, we keep a civil tongue in our heads on these boards. |

Hi me again. Just thought I'd tell you that I actually got another W/U last night over my dialup and finished it this morning. I admit I was rather surprised to receive one on 7/24 seeing as how Neason and company told us that there were 20000 work units which were made available on 7/20 and I didn't expect to get any at all. Like I said before: be persistant and even dilaup users can get work. Cheers Tom |
