I don't know if there is a posibility for the project to relaunch WUs when the number of remaining results decay below a certain limit, say 20% or 10%. In this way, crunchers that are waiting for work will get WUs and they will finish the job in hours instead of days. All happy, the project finish sooner and crunchers have more work. :) It is possible, increasing the replication for all workunits that haven't reached quorum yet. Yes, I know there are other implications on doing that (for example, it's possible that this would be considered as a punishment to the "slowly or intermiten" crunchers as it implies "categorize" of crunchers) Currently running results from that workunit would still be accepted back, granted credits, and count for the quorum. |

All happy, the project finish sooner and crunchers have more work. :) SIMAP has done this. Initial replication = 2, quarum = 2, a couple days before the deadline they reissue the WUs that haven't reached quorum yet. From a servers point of view, it isn't doing much since there aren't any more results to send out, and the rush of incoming results is over so there is just one more surge (small, kind of like when the first batch of WUs reach deadline) before the deadline is reached. One of my machines has racked up a debt with LHC of 400000 sec. When WU's are available it grabs six of four hours duration. Now 6*4=24*60=1440 sec. After mooching around for twenty minutes or so it again goes and grabs a few WU's and so on and so forth, until somehow it removes the debt. I am connected 24/7 so i know the people on dial up cannot wait for twenty minutes for Boinc to make up its mind. Now five machines all with debt grab hold of a lot of WU's just because of this debt problem. Missed deadline on two QMC WU's because their were LHC WU's to crunch. Now add into the equation resources given to LHC and U have a problem. This problem will only be removed when LHC has a lot of work. Regards Masud. |

Now 6*4=24*60=1440 sec. (6 WUs)*(4 hrs/WU)*(60 min/hr)*(60 sec/min) = 86400 seconds of work |

reminds me of this little tale - its off topic so purists can skip over it. The linguistics lecturer was droning on as per usual, and today talking about double negatives. "It is interesting to note that languages are divided on the meaning of a double negative. In some, such as French, a double negative is simply a more emphatic negative, whereas other languges, including English, treat a double negative as a positive. Of course, double positives are always positive, there is no known case of a double positive denoting a negative". At this point a voice from the back of the lecture theatre was heard "Yeah. Right". Looks like there's SOME life from our new admins (See the front page news) so I suspect that soon these types of threads will go the way of the dinosaurs once a steady(ier) supply of work starts to flow.... |

:-) Sorry for the mistake and the delay in response:-) but the implications you can still get:-) Regards Masud. Now 6*4=24*60=1440 sec. |
