Hi.

I recently joined LHC@home, but have
never gotten any work units to process.

Could someone please explain why?

I'm an Einstein@Home user. I've used
a 50:50 work ratio for both projects.

Kind regards, Sandeep.

Hi Sandeep and welcome to the project.
A quick look through some of the other posts will show you that there is rarely enough work to satisfy all those who want it. There is lots of physical work to do in the building of the accelerator using the results produced here so there are always going to be periods were we have no work while the plumbers, elecricians etc. do there bit. Rumour has it that there will soon be a new Garfield project for us to play with, running alongside this one. (Concurrently and not mutually exclusive, I hope?)
I missed out on the last batch of work, but I'm happy to let my machine continue with its Climate Prediction model while we await the next batch.
Keep your machine attached just in case of work being available, but leave it to crunch other projects while there isn't.

I also don't get any work to do...

About this Garfield: would I need to install something to participate, or just BOINC will do it automatically?

Mmm, I would just love to work there and be a part of those BIG projects :) Not just remotely, but actually to make it happen :) To work near accelerator... :)

Um, and hello everybody!

All 3 posts before this is quite old.

So is this still the case ?
(That there is no work units around for all users to get yet)

Yes. Although the work supply has been much larger the past few months, it is still intermittent. At this time there is no work available.

I understand there's still no or little work, right?

As the turn-up of the LHC is imminent now, are there any plans to use the help of the LHC@Home Community for doing the real science on LHC?

Regards,

No. As previously posted by the admin (these quotes have been snipped, but you get the general idea).
We have a second project it's called the Grid. The LHC's computing needs are being fulfilled by that IF we can get something ported to BOINC we will but I reiterate we have no money. Also it's not just the download are you all willing to have large, hard drives, massive broadband connections and run only Scientific Linux (CERN edition) and not use your machines for anything else?

and
However this would require a person to port the software from the current Grid setup to BOINC and for the Grid software to be actually portable. Not only do we not have this person (see the money issue above) we have also been told that there is no way the applications the Grid runs are lightweight enough to be ported to BOINC. We keep prodding and asking about simulation applications/other experiments etc but nothing so far.

Hope this helps

Michael

Thanks, Michael, this surely helped.

I use the GridRepublic software and account manager. I am able to get work from other projects like Einstein@Home. But LHC@Home keeps saying "You have used the wrong URL. The correct URL is http://lhcathomeclassic.cern.ch/sixtrack/. When convienient, detach the project and attach it." This happens even when I remove and add the project. (The "detach" button is greyed out all the time)

Any ideas on what's wrong and how to fix it?
