It's simply amazing what people will do to inject a little bit of excitement in to their otherwise boring lives on a Sunday Afternoon.

I'm now drawn to this thread like people drawn to a crimescene or a roadside auto accident to catch a glimpse of the gore or like a moth to the open flame. It's turned in to a free-for-all trainwreck just waiting to crash 'n burn only because Neasan & Alex are too busy worrying about REAL issues to have to babysit some of the more "thin skinned" members of our community here.

They have (so far) 'trusted' us to maintain standards of self moderation but if ANY thread on these forums deserves to be nuked entirely...this one does.

Trolling & flaming ones way to winning a Message Board 'debate' (and I'm being rather generous in classifying what this thread has degenerated into as a debate) is alot like participating in and ultimately winning a race in the Special Olympics.....

Very nice use of bold, italics, and underlining. Indeed, BBCode is lots of fun. Anyway, I like this thread even though it has "unraveled" into a train wreck. It is quite entertaining, and wounded prides heal quickly.

Maybe things will cool off and the thread will find a grove soon. The unexpected posthumous appearance of Barry White was a pleasant surprise. As for Dagorath, I think his last post showed some improvement: He has started spelling "stupid" correctly for the very first time!

I vote keep the thread and don't ban anyone. JMHO.

Hey admins, once you get the project moved and upgraded to the latest version of BOINC you can appoint users as moderators to keep this type of flame fest under control... Just in case you needed more incentive to complete the move :)

Aw, heck. Give us a break. We're just bored and feel like being childish. Now that some work is coming down the pipeline, maybe we'll start behaving more like adults (no guarantees!)

If a user starts to post to several threads the way many of us have here, then I say ban 'em. But the "bloody free-for-all" atmosphere that characterizes this thread is harmless, given it stays relatively isolated.

Indeed. I was surprised to note the 2 RAC on my side. I actually got 3 or so workunits on the 9th. Heh. Anyway, it's all in good fun.

I don't take any of this stuff too seriously and as the author of BOINCprog, I'm satisfied that I've given back to the community sufficiently to be forgiven for the occasional whinge or lapse in judgment.

I'm considering locking/deleting this topic and banning users. "Flame" posts are of no real benefit in my experience but if users want one I'll leave it here and rename it.

However no matter what you all think if I think this is getting out of hand it's gone and members will be warned.

I do. And thank you, Neasan, for showing up at this "crime scene". It has been a bit of fun, and your idea of renaming it seems reasonable. I'm just wondering what the new name should be... maybe "Flame Fest 2006-2007" ?

As for YOU Neasan, I've never encountered an Admin who is so attentive to the users. At risk of being accused of lip serving, you are the best BOINC-project Admin ever. You rock. Keep up the great communication, and drink a cup of tea for me!

I for one wouldn't cry if this thread went away. Actually one might argue that Dagorath's last post has invoked Godwin's Law and therefore this thread should be locked and left to drop off the front page... But whatever.

OK I'll rename it in a minute.

I'm aware of Godwin's Law and when I'm on a board where a topic invokes it I promptly leave said board never to return. Excessive trolling/flaming is in my opinion worthy of a banning I know "it's only the internet" but that is my point it IS only the internet, just relax.

I will leave this thread for letting off steam/flaming but I will be watching it and may delete it, as I said, if I believe it negatively impacts on the community.
