LHC@home

Hi, Folks

I only have LHC set to a resource share of 12.5% of total capacity but, because there has been so little work available, my LTDs fouled up my Boinc Manager to such an extent that it wouldn\\\\\\\'t ask for any work for anything but LHC and that had nothing to give. This was such a waste of resources that I contacted Boinc and the stuff below is the correspondence which has cured my lockup. Please note that you need to close down Boinc Manager before starting BoincDV. Apologies for the sequence being in reverse order.

All you had to do was detach from LHC, which would have deleted your local LHC LTD history, and then reattach.

I\'ve had my debts all one sided for LHC at one point, but never had the problem that you described. All of the other projects requested work when they needed it. I never ran out of work.

This was my first time. With 600,000 seconds owed to LHC, all my projects had hit their limit of time owed. All I had left was CPDN coupled modules but they take over 100 days of continuous running to finish.

Assuming that LHC has a close relation to DESY, I wonder if it wouldn\'t make sense to add a project client for ZEUS to this project - for the time when LHC has no \"native\" WUs available.

I don\'t recall where I have seen it - but some web page had informations about ZEUS Grid computing stuff, still looking for nodes.

Maybe they even need computing power for this long TESLA thing.

I mean, as the DC project infrastructure is already here, it could probably be used for more than just people receiving \"out of work\" messages ;-)

Not sure what version of Boinc you are using, but I don\'t have a max of 600K. In fact, on my 8 core machine, I have something like -32M built up on one project (CPDN of course). That debt will be paid once I get all of the currently downloaded CPD WU\'s crunched and uploaded.

Wow I actually got 2 Work Units, nice.
Anyone know if the Graphics are fixed?
Id like to take a look because they are pretty. :P
But i wont risk crashing the WU.

Damn,I had a work unit (my first since I joined) and I crashed it trying to see the graphics T_T
Now I won\'t get more,even if I pause everything else.I hope my sacrifice will help others not doing the same mistake.

edit: talked too fast,got another work unit,now I'm doing my best to give it work time.

Some work units are dribbling out. I got 4 this morning.

BTW, I don\'t run graphics from BOINC so no crashes. Graphics just eat up valuable CPU cycles.

When comes a huge number of WU\'s.I think the biggest machine
can bring so much data to crunch.
Please tell us all when comes large number of WU\'s?

Considering the very very low sending rate of WU, either LHC data is not available at all, or LHC data is available but only processed by the LHC Grid, which doesnt rely on volunteer computing, i.e. LHC@home project in this case.
If the second possibility is true, the usefulness of LHC@home project appears rather questionable.

I just checked the four machines I have on this project. In the last two months, all machines have gotten WU\'s and completed all of them successfully.

I am connected to LHC@home since august 31 2010 and got my first WU september 01 to crunch. It\'s a 00:22:54 SixTrack 4209.00 task. Still wating in line september 2 at 23:00 UTC.
Hope it will work just fine !

I got 11 WUs from the LHC@home server. 9 tasks are finished and validated and 2 still running at 03:20 08/03/2010

There will be work, yes. Most probably there will not be enough work to keep all computers running 24/24 at any moment.

My suggestion: also join some other project on Boinc where you see non-stop work coming from. That way you can keep your processors happily running non-stop.

I am running Einstein@home which is now also searching for pulsars besides gravitational waves,QMC@home doing computer chemistry, AQUA@home simulating a quantum computer, climateprediction.net running climate models on vert long deadlines, and, yes, SETI@home which started all this and has very lively forums.

I would add Cosmology@home, MilkyWay@home and Spinhenge@home to Tullio\\\'s list. I prefer the physics related projects but do work on some others as well. The EDGeS@home and World Community Grid are umbrella projects that have sub-projects of their own. I haven\\\'t been getting a lot of credit from EDGeS. I also work on WUprop@home because I like stats and that\\\'s what this project does. WUprop also does not hand out lots of credit but it is a low CPU usage project so doesn\\\'t take processing time away from the science projects.

In a way, the new commers have had to get used to a more difficult time getting a single unit, then those of us who were around for many years had to. And yet I remember when I was the new commer (when account creation opened back up), and work seemed a bit less abundent, then what it had been. But that was nothing like the years since. Hydrogen@home and Pirates would be about on par now...

But yeah, just keep it connected if you want to get something. Something should come, eventually.

i only have LHC@Home installed on my work PC. this morning i came into work and got into my usual routine. not long after arriving, i noticed my CPU temp was a good ~12°C higher than it usually is, and i couldn\'t figure out why. after about 15 min. of troubleshooting and investigating the PC\'s internals with the side panel removed, i realized my PC was crunching LHC tasks!

...just goes to show you how often LHC tasks come along these days. they\'re so few and far between that i thought my PC might be overheating LOL!
