I'm sorry to say, having been one of the earliest beta members that the current parlous state of this project leaves me totally disillusioned.

So - I'm closing down my BOINC activities.

It's been fun, sometimes.

Crunch well!

I joined shortly after you did to help with the end of the beta testing. And after a couple months moved on to beta other projects because this project did not seem to advance after going live. About 3 months ago i reactivated my account to once again help out but the project seems to be going backwards and am feeling much the same as you. Who would have thought that after almost two years it would be in worse shape than it was back in beta. You would think that if the project appreciated our efforts to help the project they would maintain the Boinc portion of the cern project.

P.S. : Mike, I hope you don't stop all boinc activity because there are some other worthwhile projects that could use the help.

Although account creation is temporarily disabled Malariacontrol AKA Africa@home is a very good project with steady work. It is also part od CERN.
Don't give up on this project either. Crunch other projects and set the priority on this one high. I run 6 projects with this one with a resource share of 33.3. This way when the work comes along I get some. You can control how much with your cache. I hope this helps and don't give up.

I am also a September 2004 man. I don't see why the state of any one particular project should cause you to reject BOINC totally, however, your choice.

I fail to see why people hate this project so much, I have to say it has been the most reliable project I run out of 20 or so projects. When there is work to be done BOINC on my computers gets it runs it then returns it almost without fail. I check on the project web site every other month or so just to stay upto date.

If people are looking for a project that has constant work this is not the project as has been stated so many times it is not funny, the reason for this has been said almost as often.

If you are really disillusioned with this project and others on the BOINC platform, don't post a dummy spit with no real reasons just go quietly.

Now that I had my dummy spit I will go about my life for the next month or so before I check on this project again because it is as stated so reliable.

Too bad! I know that it seems that nothing is going on with LHC, but if you look at what they have to do to get their science going you might have more patience. It can take quite a while (months,if not years) before they have an experiment set up so that they can generate information to analyze. had you been to their web site? This is not the only source of news about CERN and the LHC. CERN

Let's crunch for our future.

As you can see I joined a day after you and have crunched just a little more (I did have access to a couple of work machines there for a bit). The project has had its ups and downs and they never promised to have work 24/7 and infact they have been quite plain in saying that they will only have work intermittantly. Yes, recently it has been more intermittant than the good old days and yes, they have been hurt by the leaving of a good (albeit part time) sys admin. I think I have "lost" atleast 10,000 credits over the almost 2 yrs (wow it's been that long) I have crunched LHC for some reason or another.

All up I believe there is more work to be done. We have done our bit to help the folks setting the initial magnet control parameters sort out the unstable no go zones. We are now just waiting on the next killer app (Garfield?) that they are able to port across to the BOINC platform and the 90+% Windows users. Patience is a virtue and with LHC we need to have a little more virtue (and some feedback form the project admins aka Ben Segal would be nice every-now-and-then).

Live long and BOINC.

Sorry to be losing you Mike............

Yes - LHC has had it's ups and downs but isn't life like that too?

Why give up now.......Stay with BOINC; there are other projects to crunch even if you do abandon LHC.

Always hated people making drama like this on our boards. It was almost always caused by management, but affected out team negatively. Well, we ditched management and made a new team!

We made a point of telling our members who joined this project not to expect work all the time and that it's a good secondary project. That suits us fine.

You guys who whinge and moan about the lack of work realize, of course, that the LHC is going to be online as of November 2007, right? There are going to be precious few changes made to the construction plans from this point barring the most subtle tweaks. That means that precious few workunits will be forthcoming from this project, IMO.

I could be mistaken, but I'd say we've crunched most of the numbers already and that the project will be gradually winding down over the next 18 months. I hope my contribution has been worthwhile.

I can understand the moaning, as there's very little Updates coming from the Staff these days.

I mean (without further Information given) what use is an Attached Project if there's hardly ever work ?

Considering what Problems this causes on the BOINC Scheduler's Long Term Debt increasing issue, I'm also thinking that 'it might be complete but noone has made the final decision yet'...

The work submission system has been turned off while we migrate LHC@home to a server that is fully integrated with the cern automatically managed server infrastructure. "

Seems like a pretty major update to me. Put your workfetch on suspend for a while if the "No work from project" message annoys you. Other projects will do this now and again as well (Predictor@home is down while they "implement new methods of protein structure prediction", i.e. change tactics after a different method used by someone else gave much better results).

Ok - I've had enough of this.

I made a single post wishing you all well, and gave as my reason for departing as the poor state of the project.

Since then I seem to have been turned into the devil incarnate beacuse I 'whinge and moan', because I 'post a dummy spit', because I 'hate the project', blah, blah, blah...

So let's get it right.

I don't hate the project. LHC has always been my favourite project, and the other projects don't interest me for a variety of reason I don't intend to expound upon here. I am disappointed by the lack of work, and the dearth of any realistic system support from CERN. And since electricity prices in Britain have doubled in the last 18 months I can't leave PCs on idly waiting for small amounts of work that don't materialise. So, I shut down BOINC.

I watch the boards from time to time to see if I can contribute. If I can, maybe I'll start BOINC up again. Meanwhile, I'd trouble those of you who have posted the real whining to stay polite.

Crunch well, everyone!

If I hadn't put LHC fully suspended, I'd have lost upto 75% of my computing power long ago, thanks to the associated Scheduler Bug.

My point was, if you look closer at the MessageBoards, you'll hardly find any Staff answering the old questions here... and the News Update was only one in a long time, which I find disappointing (considering how much support the Project got in the past and even today after an average of 98% No-Work Phases).

In other Projects I participate, there's much more Interaction by Staff, which makes the whole thing much more enjoyable (it just shows that they care and stay involved); that's something I find quite important and I just miss it here (used to be different in the early days IMHO)

Hello Gaspode. Be asured you are not the devil incarnate. For the same reasons as you I will switch LHC to no work fetch if there will no informations about what is going on and when new wu's are available.

What I did was: Reset the project or edit LTD to a small value. Set the ressource share to 1. LTD will now grow very slowly but the check for new work happens none the less.

Stop BOINC, edit client_state.xml to get LTDs you want (search for <long_term_debt>), and restart it! If you understand XML, or you only change the numbers (remember decimals need to have a point, not a comma!), then you won't break anything. I remember LHC getting negative LTD because of a period with work, and I edited it to have a high LTD in order to catch the work. Then changed it back to low (or negative) when they have no work.

Somebody should make a nice GUI for editing debts. Or even better: I want a custom version of BOINC core client without debts. The debt system is really great if you "set it and leave it", but I prefer to control things myself.

Try BOINC Debt Viewer. I think it can be found on the additional applications page (or whatever it is called). Works great. Just make sure you shut down the daemon (file - exit, not just the red x). Then it's just one click.
