I didn't get any either, and I am on 24/7....

Have NO idea why I cannot get ANY wu's. I am only running ONE SETI unit, and have suspended EAH for two days now, as I suspected LHC was going to put some up...

HELP!!

Dora

I have five PC's running full time Dora and only one of mine got any today, about 10. There's still over 14K available but I've got to many WU's from other projects. ;-(

Six machines here, but no joy with respect to (WRT) any new work. Guess I musta missed the window ....

That makes four or five batches now that I did not get to share in the work.

Something really needs to be done by the project to create a more fair distribution of work since the greedy ones here never learned to share. My computer is always connected and asks for work many, many, times a day but they get snapped up between deferals. The work would get done much faster if all the connected computers got some work instead of just a few computers getting large amounts that then sits in their cache for a few days.

Many hands light work makes.

If that does not make sense to you then maybe this will.
Suppose you needed a ditch dug and you had to do it by yourself with one shovel. It would take a long time. But if you had 20 people with 20 shovels it would be done almost right away.

The whole point behind distributed computing is to share the work amongst many computers.

Another thing, why do you think the default setting for the cache is only 0.1 day?

Mmmmm. I like the idea of barter for WUs, seems to be about the only way some of us will get any. Let me offer something to help wash the cookies down with. Mike

I tend to agree with Steve on this one. Unless they limit the amount of work units distributed to everyone, Then it seems to me that as usual, The lions share of them will always go to the "Corporate Crunchers" , And whats left over goes to the lucky few of us that happen to get the crumbs.

I have one machine running here 24/7. Cache is set at 0.1 days.

Luckily I received (and returned, completed) three WUs today.

Good job I have other projects to keep me busy!

Okey Doke...

Waxing analytically for a moment, I found the below on one of the About LHC pages...

So my question is, do I have a processor that LHC does not trust? I know I am slow, old, etc., and this may be a logical reason for not gettign work units. Or it could just be that I am VERY unlucky, or maybe it is a cache thing, so I am downsizing mine again just to see what happens. I will try .4, because I think that is what it was set at when I did get some stuff...

Any thoughts??

D

...Besides helping build the LHC, LHC@home is helping to provide some fundamental insights into the challenges of distributed computing. Both with LHC@home, and with an in-house precursor called CPSS, it was discovered that different processors can produce sometimes markedly different results. This is due to the ways that certain mathematical functions such as exponential and tangent handle rounding errors on different processors. The lack of an internationally accepted standard for this, combined with the often chaotic nature of the particle orbits in the SixTrack simulations, which tend to amplify even the smallest differences, can produce significantly different results on different computers. Although initially perceived as a setback, this problem can be dealt with using newly developed function libraries from a group at the Ecole Nationale Suprieure in Lyon. The result also provides a potentially important insight for those currently developing applications for Grid computing, since ultimately these will also have to run on a wide range of computers...

The libraries referred to in the extract you found have done a very good job of standardising results across processors. If your processor is untrusted then you'll get a message in your output file to the effect of 'There was work available for other platforms'. This is the sort of message you'd see if you had a Mac, for example.

If you're processor is just turning in bad results then you'd never get any credit. By degrees your 'Maximum daily WU quota per CPU' setting (listed against each computer) would creep down to zero, and you'd get 'Quota exceeded'messages.

If all you're seeing is 'No work from project' then you're being unlucky. Blame the crunchers with seven day caches for sucking the well dry before you get to it.

Is there any particular time I could be more likely to "get lucky" and get some work, or is it entirely random? If it would help to get up early, for example, I may do so once in a while.

There is new work when there is no work in progress. With little thing nearly.
Therefore, no moment of day very precise. To be connected all the time and hope manager communicates with LHC at the good moment. There is work only a few minutes since some time!

Im getting crumbs of one or two very short work units every couple of days atm. The very small batches being released get snapped up in minutes. Hopefully another big run soon as im getting bored with so few little Wu's

I guess all we can do is to stand ready, and hope our request for work hits the scheduler at the right moment. Until that happens, I guess all we can do is wait and wait ....

I have been getting quite a few the last 2 times on 2 of my pc's........but I guess my firewall has been stopping my fast pc from getting any and I just got lucky since they are now online 24/7 so the other 2 have lots of them to do (lots of sixtrack 4.67 that take less than an hour each)
