Hey crunchers, check this out This question is for River~~,Alex and any crunchers who can help! (w/ exception of Mike Mitchell, please sir, this is a serious question!:) At a small scale In the collision of particals we are searching for an escaping graviton from our membrane. At a larger scale Can our universe be the cause of a collision of somesort? If an escaping graviton were to represent an escaping universe! Hi Ernesto. I did recall something about colliding galaxies. It came from a 1930s/40s SciFi series by E.E.'Doc' Smith...... Here's a small excerpt:- The series opens in Triplanetary, two billion years before the present time. The universe has few life-forms, except for the elder race of our galaxy, the Arisians, and few planets besides their native world. The Arisians, a peaceful race native to this universe, are already at this time ancient, and have forgone physical needs in preference for contemplative mental power which they have developed and refined to an exceedingly high degree. Into this universe, from an alien space-time continuum, come the Eddorians, a dictatorial power-hungry race. They have been attracted to this universe by the observation that our galaxy and a sister galaxy (later to be named Lundmark's Nebula) are passing through each other. According to an astronomical theory current at the time of writing (prior to the rehabilitation of the nebula hypothesis), this will result in the formation of billions of planets and the development of life upon them. The dominance of these life forms offers the Eddorians an opportunity to satisfy their lust for power. More details of those books here. Apologies for not producing any 'hard' scientific facts, but hey! the 'Lensman' books represent the 'Golden Age' of SciFi. I do hope some of you will give them a glance! |

Hey crunchers, check this out Myself, I'm a String Theory Skeptic. Just because you can create a mathematical equation to describe the strong nuclear force in the micro micro micro microscopic scale doesn't mean you should extrapolate those results to the galaxy size scale. The last time someone did that, they looked at the floor, and saw that it was flat; looked at a field, and saw that it was flat, looked at a map of their region, and saw that it was flat, and then assumed the rest of the world was flat. I'm not the LHC Alex. Just a number cruncher like everyone else here. |

The last time someone did that, they looked at the floor, and saw that it was flat; looked at a field, and saw that it was flat, looked at a map of their region, and saw that it was flat, and then assumed the rest of the world was flat. Actually, physicists are doing it all the time. It's a basic tenet of cosmology that the same rules of physics hold everywhere. It's not clear to me how they can be so sure about this. For example, if there were some property of light that caused photons to lose energy over great distances then the whole red-shift method of estimating distances could be open to question. Myself, I'm a String Theory Skeptic. String Theory never made sense to me either. I mulled it around in my head since it was first explained to me and I can't get all the pieces to fit. Didn’t Hawking’s recent rebutle of his Theory of Everything include String Theory? As for gravity, it doesn't make sense until we get to the galaxy size scale. Then its compounding effect is undeniable! 8-) And I accept the current explanation for the status quo of the three other forces (there are some other bits, aren't there?). As for the Flat Earth theory, it has to correct or all the Moon landing conspiracy theories fail and that's not possible is it?? 8-D ;-) EDIT: Opps. I almost forgot, the fifth dimension is just another axis other than x, y and z. Like being able to turn right at an intersection without giving way to oncomming traffic (change right to left in applicable countries :-).
