LHC@home

It looks that with Chrulle leaving the emphasis on project communication within CERN has taken a huge backward step. What is currently happening? I know work normally comes in fits and starts, but it would be good if someone from the project could give us a current update. I know there was talk of at least one other application we could crunch and that it was being worked on. What is the status?

Right now BOINC is connecting to LHC@Home hourly to see if there is more work.

I'm not worried about the traffic, but it really clutters up the logs.

During a long dry spell like this, would it be possible to raise that interval?

If you set it to once a day, you could lower it a day or two before new work is due.

does anybody know if there is a newsletter, that is sent automatically once there is new work available? Either from lhc@home or from some team out there? Checking mail is easier for me than returning to the site each day. In periods of no work I usually disable work requests in BOINC and then it happens that I'm too late to get some work ;)

The project news are posted as RSS feed as well, but they're not so up-to-date, so I guess the real problem is the people at CERN not caring enough about their poor loyal crunching sheeps!

What's the benefit of setting LHC to no new work?

In the new scheduler, if you set a project to NNW and there is no work actually available, it doesn't increase your LTD. If you have it set to NNW and there IS work available it does increase your LTD. I'm not sure if this is a benefit.

Well the benefit is, that the logfile isn't filling up with messages like "no work available". It's annoying to read the logfile when there's a message like this each and every hour ;)

the best thing would be for them to post a news item that new work is available
if you don't want to have to visit the site to read news (or check if there are even any new items) then get a feed reader, such as SharpReader and add the LHC RSS news feed to it, then it'll be easy to check, as easy as email, but without the many problems associated with an email list/newsletter (for both recipients and the project staff)

also setting no new work means exactly that, no new work, the ideal situation is that a boinc client should be allowed to get new LHC work when available, and some other method used to reduce the frequency of the log entries

For some reason I am unable to get the RSS feed link to work in SharpReader.
Could someone please post the working address or a how-to please

no got lots of work at present until everyone check the home page lol

It is not that the admin do not care, but very often they know that there are new WU exactly the same way you do. By the number going up on the frontpage. The submission system is completely automated and the physicist that is submitting most of the work is in Canada. So even if he remembers to send an email saying he is putting up more work, the admins will probably have gone home. You should also remember that there is no full time admin at the moment.

But summer is soon here, so a bunch of summerstudents will be arriving soon. I am sure one of them will be put to work on the Boinc system, and will have some spare time to do some sys-admining.

Thought you were off to the homeland and then to the States to look for a job. Still in Switzerland? Anyhow, it is good to see you are still around and keeping your eye on the message boards. Any more news on the new projects which you mentioned some months ago?
