1) Thanks for the update(s); it's promissing an upcoming interesting time for the LHC-Participiants :-)

2) It has always been a special touch, being a member of the LHC-cruncher-team and, as I could read, it will continue like this ...

3) Chrulle, I feel sad, you are leaving, a lot of people will miss you, but: Good Look for your new work !

Supporting BOINC, a great concept !

Nice update:

point1: Will the work be more and more melted together instead of 1 buffer stop 1 buffer. This is important because else we have too switch projects so much, and if we can't (or don't notice) pc's will run idle. YIKEEEEE idle, nanananan i can't hear you.!!! ;)

point2: Ah pitty your leaving chrulle, new work place i hope.

Ps: I guess will not be ass progressive as DPAD is.
I like the DPAD idea but it is not really user-friendly a bit chaotic(on the outside, webpage etc.)

Hi Ben and Chrulle,

thank you for providing detailed information about the future of LHC@home.

All the best wishes go to Chrulle. We will hopefully see you on the message boards from time to time.

The search engines already knew about more BOINCifying of CERN for quite a while ;-)

As DC becomes more respectable, we can expect to see growth in both directions - more enormous projects but also many many more small "limited edition" projects. Or that is my guess, anyway.
Sounds reasonable to me, i'd have to agree

All hail BOINC :D
the bringer of projects, science, and truth ;)

but seriously, i find it quite exciting to know that due to BOINC, we may get to crunch for projects that would have otherwise failed under the traditional DC model (one client & app per project)

innovations like BOINC allow people to do things that would otherwise have never been thought of. I see BOINC being the start of a huge leap forward for science, allowing projects to have their own "Grid" and achieve more accurate results at greater speed than ever

just take a look at Wonder If Any Of This Work Will Filter Through To Boinc on the BOINCstats forum for an idea of what i mean.
I think a project like that could be done easilly with something like BOINC, if there was a great enough % of the worlds PCs contributing to the crunching

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I would like to see more projects especially the "mission critical" ones like they mention in the previous link. I think it would be great for the BOINC community because people will be able to see and feel the benefits more clearly than they would with other projects like where they search for other forms forms of life or collect the structures of proteins.....

I also hope that another project does not end up like Rosetta where they still are having major problems with their work units after the beta stage. This could be detrimental if users lose the faith in the admins running the project. I lost faith in Rosetta and will NEVER crunch for them because of the problems I had with their workunits and a lack of responsiveness in their forums. Thats another issue for another time........

Well, I mentioned that, because it's the first time I've seen that message; even when SETI for instance was having network issues, or recovered from a long outage due to dBase server issues or whatever...

All said though, I know that it wasn't that long since September when I signed up, but as many have noticed, yeah the batches don't last as long. That could possibly be as much a result of increases in users, as it is decreases in work loads. All said however, on another level it might not be so bad that we run outa work (and not due to a technical difficulty), and sorta get used to this, have other projects, etc... I've seen some people on the RALPH (Rosetta alpha project) complain when they've been out of results, and it's almost been an "eh, I crunch over at LHC, you get used to it, just get another project :D " Well either way...

Hey River~~,

I have a quick question for you about the limited nature of LHC@Home.

I have been wondering if the project will end come 2007 once the LHC is complete and operational.

I could well see them either possibly disable (albeit in a temporary manner) LHC@home, or leave it sitting there. As has been mentioned, if they need the resource, our accounts would still be there. However, once they've developed their super-collider, they won't need more analysis leading to it's own development, as it will already be done...

There could of course be newer projects along this way, say 10-20 years down the road when they might be looking to build a bigger one. Who knows...

That said, if too many years go by, people might have stopped connecting this project, checking news on it, or whatever, so they might be in a position of needing to email the user base to say "we're back up and need crunchers". 4-5 years for instance, could be a long interum with no work needed...

On a more personal note I will leave Cern at the end of the month. I do not yet know who will take over the day to day server administration, but i expect Ben will look in on the message boards from time to time.

Best wishes for your new venture, you will be missed here.

I echo the praise for you Ben & Chrulle!!!!!!!!!!!!

I also am glad to hear that other groups at CERN are thinking about applying LHC to their studies. I hope this will happen because I see work will be much more frequent. Either way, it feels good that I am such an important project for science and I hope that the other crunchers feel the same way!

That others would be interested in using our comps for more work is a good sign :D It means more work could be comming down the pike...

BTW, as much as a lul we're in, there is a good side to work having dwindled... It means we've actually accomplished something here, and the fruits of our crunching will see some fruition... As much as we might be waiting for more work, in the end it's the results it brings that matters, and obviously the results which in large measure has already been accomplished...

...
Africa@home:
The Malariacontrol project has been spun-off from CERN. The servers have been relocated to the university of Geneva and to STI in Basel for the beta phase. To learn more about the project go to Africa@home. We are now looking for other projects to run within the africa at home project.
...

Your link to Africa@Home is invalid. When I click on it it trys to go to
http://"http//africaathome.org"
Note the redundant http and the second gets the colon stripped off. I think the BBCode should be
[ URL=africaathome.org][ /URL]
.

Good luck Chrulle, we'll all miss you.

Are you going somewhere else to set up another BOINC project...? =D

Another interesting aspect to the LHC peaks and valleys with work units is the way DC is growing. In the old days, all users would die when SETI had problems. Now we can set up several projects on our PC's to run in parallel. I have a few polling LHC for work, but they are kept plenty busy with other DC projects as we sit here and wait.

From the user perspective it has been interesting watching the big projects get going. It is just as interesting seeing how a small project like LHC can find a niche. So I plan to keep these PC's polling LHC just to be part of the experience.

The best part is that there are plenty of PC's out there waiting to help solve any number of interesting problems.

Thanks,

I am now officially an ex-lhc@home developer, although i will probably lend a helping hand if something goes horribly wrong. I will spend a couple of weeks in Denmark fixing all the paper work of moving back here. Then i will go on vacation/job hunting in california.

I have some opportunities continuing to do Boinc projects. I might join africa@home for example.

Thanks for all your support of LHC@home. It has really helped the accelerator people. It looks like there is a possibility of other programs (Garfield a.o.) running on lhc@home next to SixTrack. This will help mitigate the intermittent work problem.

Chrulle

It was a real pleasure being a member of the team in which you were forum moderator, project administrator, project developer and last but not least physicist all in one. And then an active contributor to the message boards as well. It meant that when one had a technical question, be it about work units or be it about physics he didn't get the answer "I'll have to send that to the technical people and see what they say" as is the case in other projects. Also I appreciate the freedom you allowed those posting to the message boards. There was no reprimanding people for posting to the "wrong" board and that sort of thing.

I have one suggestion that you might pass along to you Boinc colleagues . That is that Boinc set up a newsletter to which one can subscribe and in which they inform the crunchers of all Boinc projects - existing, new and future. Especially information about projects which are on the drawing board - what the project is about, when it will enter the testing phase, the URL for pre-registeration etc. I am sure others will have more suggestions. Lastly, I think that there are a lot of people out there who would relish the opportunity to help with such a project as setting up and running a newsletter. The whole burden does not have to fall on people such as yourself. Many of the crunchers are very qualified and be very happy to be able to contribute more than just time on their PC's.

Lastly, I think for the US you are going to need a work permit, green card and all that stuff. If any of us can do anything for you, please let us know.
