From the news item on the front page, 21 Jan:
The new study is an extension of previous simulations. We want to evaluate the long term beam stability in the LHC in the presence of unknown or partially corrected magnetic imperfections, i.e. small field errors in the magnet elements. This scenario must be expected especially in the first few years of the LHC and in particular during its startup in 2007.

If I understand the news item correctly, the new runs are about predicting the effects of mis-configurations before they happen - which I assume will speed up the deployment of the machine once the civil engineering is finished, and reduce down time when the inevitable problems occur.

The necessary resources for such a study are available only within the LHC@home project.

If I have understood our role correctly, up to now we've been saving CERN money - they's have had to find machines to crunch all the design data from somewhere and indeed in the early satages of the LHC project they were running WU on in-house mainframes as well, in case not enough of us came forward to offer our cpu cycles.

We are now moving into a phase where we, the crunchers, are enabling the beam physicists to deliver a working machine sooner than they would otherwise, and a more reliable machine due to various errors being understood before they occur. So I think anyone who has crunched one or more WU for this project can justifiably feel a little proud to read this news item - I know I do

I feel very proud to support the various projects that I'm in, but in this one I feel this particularly since I always loved the CERN work and so it feels very good to have something to do with the LHC construction.

Yes, I feel proud too. As LHC is my pet project, I'm so happy to be able to help out with the science done here. :-)

Same here :-) - I hope the LHC will be as revolutionary as some think.
