I am getting ready to do a major upgrade on my computer. New motherboard, processor and RAM, so, basically, a whole new system. I plan on moving the hard drives over without installing a new OS. Should I let all of my current work units finish or will it be ok to continue work on them with different hardware? Should I Uninstall BOINC and reinstall on the new hardware or will the project care if this copy of BOINC is suddenly on a new computer? And are there any other problems that I am not thinking of? If you want full credit for all the work you have currently downloaded to your old computer, then by all means, allow the old system to complete. The new machine will not be able to pick up where you leave off in a given task. Be sure to reset your BOINC manager so no additional work will be downloaded. You will have to disconnect and reconnect for each project (SETI, LHC, etc) you are running, and the BOINC program will assign a new number to the computer. Once the benchmark testing is completed, the BOINC program will start to download new tasks, and you will be up and running ... If I've lived this long, I've gotta be that old |

Thank you. Thank you for actually answering my question with information that is accurate and can be of use. Sorry, it is just that, on every forum that I asked on, people guessed, at best, on the actual question, then had tons of advice on what I should do when I do my hardware upgrade. They insisted that it wouldn't work. Told me how to make it work. ect... Anyway, thanks for the help. I took your advice and got all but the CPDN done. I actually don't know if it gave me a new number for the computer. I checked on several projects and my old processor was no longer listed there, but my new one was, but I never checked the old number, so I can't be sure if it is a new one or not. Oh well. Brian |
