LHC@home

One early week when we only had the first 4 projects there was a long strech where all but one were down. Imagine the tenseness when that project took a dive. The closest I was to complete collapse! :)

This is why I will be so glad when we have 10 projects in production. THEN it will be real hard to run out of work regardless.

Of course, if we could get Geant4 work with long work units like CPDN, you could run two projects and have little worry about running out of work ...

I added a few new projects because of the current crunch over at S@H and would you beleive that currently 3/4 of them are down.

I too have been waiting anxiously for new work and decided to Google the Particle Accelerator Conference 2006 in Edinburgh. I discovered it isn't until June 26-30, 2006. Forthcoming is a nice vague term which when decoded is "a long time." As 6 months is a long time.

Now they didn't say that work was dependent on its presentation at the conference. But if they ever say that work is forthcoming, then I would surmise that it could be considered something like 6 months off.

Best part about BOINC is the ability to spread the crunching around. I also like the statistical competition, but contribute based on the science and my whims. I don't consider SETI to be hard science, but I will always contribute some to their projects for having the fortitude to create BOINC in the face of adversity.

I'm hoping work will come our way, but I'm not holding my breath.

This email may be read as pessimistic, but I consider it more pragmatistic.

I've been wondering the same thing, as my client has continually been unable tog et work, and the front page shows no work. The last update we received (on the 19th of December) indicated there would be another study after Christmas. That said there was no indication of *when, after Christmas*, or more to the point how long.

Yeah there are other projects, so my CPU is busy and all, but some approximate idea of when would be nice. I could just suspend the LHC project on my comp then till that date arives, and it wouldn't continue going out on the net till then.

Well, IMO searching for ET isn't a non-worthwhile goal, though that said after the planet quest project comes out, I might disconnect from SETI. Main reason is that planet quest is supposed to couple a search for ET (what SETI already does) in addition to it's search for extra-solar planets (something SETI doesn't yet do). With a certain redundancy of effort combined with a further dimention (planet search), planet quest seems the more comprehensive study.

That said, if SETI's project levels fell too low (not something I'm concerned about, as they have a significant user base), well we sort of need Berkeley for the BOINC project to remain alive. In that case, I'd probably re-consider to keep BOINC around.

Edit: Oh wow, after posting I've just noticed that our RAC has all been shot to hell. Not that it entirely matters (when a project is offline), as we already got the credit we had :D

In fairness I took the notice before Christmas to mean that they will be working after Christmas to generate the new run of work units, etc. That could well take some time - They may well have still to do some analysis of the pre-Christmas runs so that they know what questions they want to ask next.

I'm impatient too - being stuck just over 1000 cobblestones short of where I wanted to be on this project; but I don't think the LHC guys have misled us.

I too would appreciate another brief news item with a realistic estimante of when the work is likely to come.

I did not but i did have dig myself out of a lot of snow back in Denmark. Christmas was boring and raining but then we got more than 30 cms in half a day. I really enjoyed it though, my first christmas not studying for exams in a really long time. :-)

Now i am back at CERN and we are pushing the scientists for news. We will let you know as soon as possible.

Whereabouts in Denmark?
Been there only once, for about a month, in the Arhus area.
I still enjoy the memories of waking up, going outside with a cup of coffee and seeing the sun rise over the golden grainfields near Lystrup. Just plain beautiful.

Yeah we want new work!I'm tired of crunching proteins and trying to find little green men... :)
Just kidding, most (not all of them though) of the projects do real important things, but I miss LHC and those beautiful electrons coliding in my screensaver... :(

Please? I like alpha projects. They're fun. Especially when they have tons of work to do. You can just copy this account over or something if you need to. I don't mind.

There are no plans to open Alpha testing to new users. The work is an illusion - it's just a large number of copies of a handful of results.
